The purpose of this study was to examine topic-specific nature of pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Two experienced chemistry teachers’ PCK was examined in electrochemistry and radioactivity. To capture participants’ PCK, all PCK components were studied. To get deep and rich answers to research questions asked, qualitative methodology was used. Participants were selected through purposeful sampling. Data were gathered through card-sorting activity, Content Representation (CoRe), semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and field notes. Results revealed that participants had two types of PCK, namely, PCK A for teaching electrochemistry and PCK B for teaching radioactivity. PCK A included content-based and teacher-centered instruction, many links to other topics in chemistry and in physics. The assessment was coherent which included different types of assessment strategies used at the beginning, during, and at the end of teaching. In PCK B, it was less teacher-centered. The link to other topics was limited. Additionally, teachers used fragmented assessment and were less knowledgeable about learners’ difficulties and misconceptions in radioactivity than they were in electrochemistry. Differences between PCK A and B may be related to nature of the topics. Learners need to have much pre-requisite knowledge both from chemistry and physics to learn electrochemistry. Also, there are more concepts in electrochemistry than there are in radioactivity. It seems that when teachers have to focus on more concepts to teach, they may have a tendency to teach more-teacher centered to save time. Teacher education programs should focus on topic-specific nature of PCK and provide topic-specific training to teachers.

Kutucu, Elif Selcan; Boz, Yezdan; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2016)
The purpose of this study was to examine the interaction between pre-service chemistry teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) and content knowledge (CK) while teaching electrochemistry. Two pre-service chemistry teachers enrolled in practice teaching course in chemistry education program. All PCK components were studied in the current study to examine participants’ PCK. In order to get detailed information and understand deeply the interaction between CK and PCK, qualitative methodology was used and ...

The purpose of this study was to delve into the complexities of development of preservice chemistry teachers’ science teaching orientation, knowledge of learner, knowledge of instructional strategies, and knowledge of assessment during Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) for Nature of Science (NOS) instruction. Thirty pre-service chemistry teachers enrolled Research in Science Education course participated to the study. Case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was used as research design. PCK fo...
Investigation of pre service science teachers perceptions related to pedagogical knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge
Güler, Fulden; Aksu, Meral; Department of Educational Sciences (2015)
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the pre service science teachers’ perceptions related to science teaching. Within this scope, participants’ perceptions related to their pedagogical knowledge (PK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) were examined. Furthermore, it was aimed to investigate the effect of gender and level of achievement on participants’ perceptions regarding PK and PCK. 176 fourth year pre service science teachers from three state universities of Ankara participated in th...
Assessment of preservice mathematics teachers’ knowledge for teaching statistics
Mercimek, Oktay; Erbaş, Ayhan Kürşat; Department of Secondary Science and Mathematics Education (2013)
The purpose of this study is to assess preservice teachers’ mathematical knowledge for teaching statistics (MKT-S). For this purpose, MKT-S instrument consisting of two dimensions, ‘content knowledge’ (CK) and ‘pedagogical content knowledge’ (PCK) was developed, and applied to 659 preservice middle school mathematics teachers (PTs). Confirmatory factor analysis showed that CK and PCK are two different dimensions of mathematical knowledge of teaching statistics. It was found that CK factor scores were highly...
Review of Studies Related to Pedagogical Content Knowledge in the Context of Science Teacher Education: Turkish Case
Aydin, Sevgi; Boz, Yezdan (2012-12-01)
As a review study, the present study was carried out in order to introduce PCK construct to researchers and evaluate which aspects of PCK were studied in our country, and, finally, make recommendations in light of the analysis of the studies for further research. For this purpose, ERIC database, YOK (Higher Education Council) database were searched by using "Pedagogical Content Knowledge" as keyword. Moreover, journals published in Turkey and which are possible to be reached electronically were searched usi...
