Rapid urbanization and population growth have represented a great challenge to water resources management, since wastewater generated in urban areas forms a non-conventional source, wastewater reuse is being recognized as a sustainable water management approach. This study focuses on with the potential and practibility of implementing wastewater reuse techniques in İzmir region, especially with the aim to use treated wastewater and nutrient for agriculture. To this end, qualititative and quantitative agricultural water demand were considered. This thesis introduces a wastewater reuse planning model and optimization method with an emphasis on the wastewater treatment technology used as well as the agricultural demand in the area of the study. The model was developed with considerations over water quality, wastewater treatment and discharge. The objective of the model is to upgrade existing wastewater treatment plants or to design new treatment plants in regard to reuse wastewater in agriculture. The model is also capable of comparing treatment technologies from the point of design and cost. Three case studies were represented so as to demonstrate the modeling process and optimization studies for agricultural irrigation.

Effects of ultrasound pretreatment and anaerobic digestion on the energy potential of sludge
Çelebi, Emrehan Berkay; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Department of Environmental Engineering (2015)
The by-product of wastewater treatment, sludge, is generated in tons everyday all around the world. As environmental regulations in Turkey are becoming stricter during the European Union adaptation period, the previously wide-spread disposal method of landfilling the sludge will not be applicable. Instead, dried sludge is expected to be used in revenue generating methods like land application or combustion. Combustion can be thought of as more beneficial as it uses sludge as an energy source. However, it is...
Quantification of salmonella in treated biosolids from municipal wastewater treatment plants in four cities in Turkey using culture-based techniques
Aytaç, Begüm; Murdoch, Robert W.; Department of Environmental Engineering (2016)
Large quantities of biosolids are produced every day from wastewater treatment plants. In Turkey, because there is no legally permissible use for this sludge, it is mostly sent to landfills for disposal. Land application of biosolids is a useful and valid alternative for making use of this huge amount of sewage sludge. However, it must be assured that it is adequately safe for human contact and use. In this study, biosolid samples from four Turkish treatment plants (Ankara, Eskişehir, Kayseri and Yozgat) we...
Combustion characteristics and thermal utilization of sewage sludge and coal mixtures
Atak, Onur; Atımtay, Aysel; Department of Environmental Engineering (2013)
Management of sewage sludge is generally one of the greatest problems that municipalities face due to its large quantities and different characteristics. Since dry sludge has a heating value close to a lignite coal, this energy can be recovered and used. The aim of this thesis is to investigate the beneficial use of sewage sludge by exploring its energy content. In this context, six Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) are chosen with different characteristics. Proximate and ultimate analysis, calorific valu...
A Transport cost-based optimization for arable land application of municipal sludge in Ankara
Görgüner, Merve; Sanin, Faika Dilek; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Department of Environmental Engineering (2013)
The agricultural use of sewage sludge is an alternative route for sewage sludge disposal which may also help to improve soil fertility by providing organic matter and nutrients. Yet, care should be taken to minimize soil contamination due to some constituents in sludge such as heavy metals, organic contaminants and pathogens. One approach may be selection of suitable lands. This study focuses on the determination of suitable arable lands for sewage sludge application on land in Ankara through a cost-based o...
