The improvement of construction systems and management systems do not move together in construction industry, not using the effective management approaches decrease the productivity of the work. The firms both in national and international area in manufacturing industry use supply chain management to preserve their competitive force. As material costs account for a high percentage of the overall cost, the success of a project is heavily dependent on material related factors and processes. In Turkey because of extensively using in-situ concrete in construction, the supply chain for reinforcement and concrete is very important. One of the components of concrete is “re-bar” and its supply chain, rbSC (rebar supply chain) was investigated within the scope of this research. In this study a framework was developed on the basis of the information from a literature survey and a field-test consisting of face-to-face interviews and questionnaire to determine the factors affecting the rbSC externally and those related to the supply chain participants. The developed rbSC performance framework was analyzed with Structural Equation Modeling rules. LISREL software was used, and the outputs of LISREL were evaluated by relationing with the information obtained from literature survey. The developed framework can be used to maximize both effectiveness of the rbSC process and efficiency of time and cost related issues in the rbSC. rbSC performance was associated with the project performance at the end of the study to reach a higher-level scale. The difference between the performance ratings obtained by self-assessment of a participant and those obtained through assessment done by the others was used to determine the affects of cultural issues on performance. Common reasons for the lower performance were analyzed due to cultural context and recommendations were set down for rbSC participants to solve the problems.

A Hybrid genetic algorithm for multi mode resource constrained scheduling problem for large size projects
Gürel, Mustafa; Sönmez, Rifat; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
Just like in all industries, some of the available resources, in order to finish a project on time, are constrained in construction industry. To be able to finish the project on time has high importance both for the contractor and for the owner. Project scheduling in which resources are limited for a particular time are called as resource constrained project scheduling problems (RCPSP) and occupies a significant place in construction management. Especially for large scale projects, little success has been a...
Development of a lessons learned management process model and a web-based tool for construction companies
Eken, Görkem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Department of Civil Engineering (2017)
Organizational memory formation and its effective utilization is a source of competitive advantage especially in project-based industries such as construction industry as it may eliminate potential problems in projects leading to higher profitability and less errors. However, project-based nature also poses challenges for establishing organizational memory as it is hard to capture knowledge of temporary project teams and transfer different types of knowledge between projects. This study presents a “Lessons ...
Integrated Approach to Overcome Shortcomings in Current Delay Analysis Practices
Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Dikmen Toker, İrem (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2015-04-01)
Many factors, such as unforeseeable events, managerial and financial problems of contractors, insufficient technical capacity of site teams of contractors or Consultants, and so on, may lead to delays in construction projects. Proper analysis of compensability and quantum of a delay event is of prime importance. Any delay analysis application can be considered as a result of the combination of contract documents, scheduler, record-keeping mechanism at the site, communication among project participants, dela...
Identifying the barriers of implementing lean construction principals in developing countries
Markazi Movaghar, Ehsan; Elias Özkan, Soofia Tahira; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2016)
The construction industry is congested with many types of project management systems to control and manage construction projects but none of them really look in-depth to maximize the efficiency of the work flow and minimizing waste. The implementation of the lean construction principles into the local construction scene can improve the problems. However, lean construction is complex and can be risky if not properly managed. Lean construction efforts in some other countries have not been successful due to th...
An Investigation of material waste management in prefabricated construction industry and developing a tool for effective management of waste
Rahmani Mirshekarlou, Babak; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat; Department of Civil Engineering (2018)
In order to formulate effective waste reduction strategies in construction projects, it is essential to continuously monitor and analyze the waste generation and improve the existing processes continuously. This requires to establish a waste benchmark, based on the previous experiences in the organization, to assist the project team in taking efficient and timely actions to prevent the waste at source, and enhance the corporate waste management capability. The current study is carried out to explore the was...
