This thesis analyzes the conception of laicite of the Republican People’s Party between 2002 and 2010 with reference to Republican People’s Party’s approach to veiling, imams/Đmam Hatip Liseleri, Quran Courses, Diyanet Đsleri Baskanlığı and Alevis as well as the party programmes and regulations. To give the contours of its notion of laicite, the thesis dwells on the public and private conceptualization of the Republican People’s Party. The thesis criticizes the Republican People’s Party which reads laicite in terms of this dichotomy. The thesis argues that Republican People’s Party’s conception of laicite oscillates between etatism and democracy. To contextualize Republican People’s Party’s laicite in 2002-2010, the thesis presents the historical trajectory of laicite as well as the Islamic movement in Turkey. The study suggests Turkish laicite which was instilled to the Constitution by the Republican People’s Party is the synthesis of Western modernity and Turkish state tradition. To demonstrate the extent of Republican People’s Party’s etatism and notion of democracy in relation to the principle of laicite, the thesis, therefore, focuses on this unique nature of Turkish laicite which is based on control. The thesis posits that Republican People’s Party’s laicite approaches democracy in cases it opposes religious oppression whereas it swings to etatism when it prioritizes state over individual rights of pious people.

The Legal, political and sociological roots of tutelary regime in single - party period
Ete, Hatem; Tokluoğlu, Ayşe Ceylan; Department of Sociology (2012)
This dissertation examines the political regime during the single party rule in Turkey between the years of 1923-1950 in relation to the concept of tutelage. The main argument supported in this work is that tutelary tendencies, contrary to the assumptions of Kemalist historicization, do not serve as segue to democracy, but rather make consolidation of democracy difficult, even impossible. In support, this dissertation provides a close examination of the Kemalist nation building process beginning from the Ot...

In this context, the focus will be on the transformation of the nationalist ideology, “nationalisms” in the Ottoman Empire, Kemalist/official nationalism, and transformation of Turkish nationalism to a political party ideology and its further transformation in Turkey. The reason for ...

THE ROLE OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AGENCIES IN TURKEY FROM IMPLEMENTING EU DIRECTIVES TO SUPPORTING REGIONAL BUSINESS COMMUNITIES?
Lagendijk, Arnoud; Kayasü, Serap; Yasar, Suna (2009-10-01)
Turkey's step-by-step embedding in the institutional and policy environment of the EU is currently compelling the country to establish a fitting structure of regional governance. A key element in this structure is the creation of regions at the NUTS-II level which will be equipped with Regional Development Agencies (RDAs). Yet the present political and economic situation in Turkey throws some doubt on the scope and future for RDA development. To what extent will the central state be able and willing to devo...
The Welfare Party, The Justice and Development Party and democracy : change or continuity?
Gelir, Fatma Senem; Özçoban Üstüner, Fahriye; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2006)
Through this thesis, it is aimed to study the democracy understanding of the Welfare Party (the WP), which was closed down in 1998 by the decision of the Constitutional Court, and the Justice and Development Party (the JDP), which leaved the November 2002 general elections as the leading party and has still been running the country as the single party, in a comparative way. Since the foundation of the JDP, the founders have presented the JDP as a new political formation, which is different from the WP, with...
