Power Quality (PQ) is an important issue in the operation of distribution systems. The power delivered to the consumers should be as clean as possible. Quality of power is defined in various standards or regulations such as The Electrical Distribution System Supply Reliability and Quality of Electricity Regulation in Turkey. To comply with these regulations the quality of the electrical power should be monitored and controlled at the consumer side which is at the end of the distribution system. This is achieved by designing and implementing a stand-alone and real-time Power Quality Monitoring device dedicated to the distribution system within the scope of this thesis. The PQ monitoring device, which is named Mini-PQ, processes the power signals in accordance with the international standard IEC 61000-4-30 and sends the data to a PQ monitoring center by using Power Line Communication (PLC). PLC use the existing power lines thus eliminating the need to the existing or a new local area net- work. Both hardware and software running on the Mini-PQ have been developed in this thesis work. In addition, a graphical user interface (GUI) software is developed to be used in the PQ monitoring center. Performance verification of the designed PQ monitor with field measurements are carried out and the associated results are also presented in the thesis.

Optimal maintenance scheduling for transmission lines
Özmen, Engin Berk; Göl, Murat; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2018)
The fundamental mission of a transmission system operator is to supply desired electricity to all parts of the network continuously within acceptable economic and quality standards. Transmission lines provide the essential infrastructure to carry the power from generation stations to customers. Maintenances of the transmission lines are of great importance for not only power system reliability but also operational costs and equipment life span. Furthermore, operating the system with all available equipment ...
Design and Implementation of a Hybrid System for the Mitigation of PQ Problems of Medium-Frequency Induction Steel-Melting Furnaces
Yilmaz, Ilker; Durna, Emre; Ermiş, Muammer (2016-05-01)
This paper describes a hybrid system for the mitigation of power quality (PQ) problems of medium-frequency coreless induction steel-melting furnaces. The hybrid system is composed of passive shunt-detuned filters and a hybrid active power filter (HAPF). Since the single-phase load-resonant thyristor inverter of the work coil operates at variable frequency and supplied from a multipulse thyristor rectifier, interharmonic current components, due to cross-modulation phenomenon across ac-dc-ac link, appear in s...
Short term electricity price forecasting in Turkish electricity market
Özgüner, Erdem; Güven, Ali Nezih; Tör, O. Bülent; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
With the aim for higher economical efficiency, considerable and radical changes have occurred in the worldwide electricity sector since the beginning of 1980s. By that time, the electricity sector has been controlled by the state-owned vertically integrated monopolies which manage and control all generation, transmission, distribution and retail activities and the consumers buy electricity with a price set by these monopolies in that system. After the liberalization and restructuring of the electricity powe...
A New Index for Voltage Quality Assessment at Distribution Systems
KARACELEBİ, Mert; ERCİN, Özden; Göl, Murat (2018-09-07)
Analysis of power quality problems in distribution systems is getting important day-by-day because of the increase in vulnerable non-linear loads, such as data centers across the Globe. Regulatory authorities all over the world investigate these problems in order to serve in better conditions to the users. In this article we analyzed power quality problems in terms of their effects to the users, and developed an index to observe the problematic areas. As different types of loads in terms of operation critic...
Determination of optimum values for voltage setpoints of power stations in Turkey
Elma, İsmail; Güven, Ali Nezih; Tör, Osman Bülent; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
Voltage control is performed in three hierarchical levels in Turkish power system: primary, secondary and tertiary voltage control. Primary and secondary voltage controls are defined as the regulation of the voltage at the generator terminal and at the high voltage busbar of the power plant according to the pre-determined setpoints. The determination of the voltage setpoints for the power plants, which is defined as the tertiary voltage control, is performed by the operators in National and Regional Load Di...
