Recently, improving energy efficiency in the rapidly evolving technology field of wireless communications has become an important need. To improve the ease of use, extend the field of application of wireless communications, and sustain the applications that use the technology for longer durations with less energy expenditure, study of energy harvesting systems has gained momentum. In this thesis, an offline scheduling problem in an energy harvesting system has been solved and three scheduling alorithms have been implemented in hardware. Optimal power and rate allocation for data packets arriving at arbitrary but known instances is studied by taking the channel state, the state of energy and data buffers into account over an energy harvesting fading channel. In addition, a near-optimal transmission scheduling policy, Expected Threshold Lazy Scheduling Policy (ETLS) from recent literature, is implemented and compared with Hasty and Constant Policies which are also implemented in the scope of this thesis. A point-to-point communication prototype employing v 802.11g transmission schemes is set up on software defined radio.

Finite-horizon online energy-efficient transmission scheduling schemes for communication links
Bacınoğlu, Baran Tan; Uysal Bıyıkoğlu, Elif; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2013)
The proliferation of embedded systems, mobile devices, wireless sensor applications and increasing global demand for energy directed research attention toward self-sustainable and environmentally friendly systems. In the field of communications, this new trend pointed out the need for study of energy constrained communication and networking. Particularly, in the literature, energy efficient transmission schemes have been well studied for various cases. However, fundamental results have been obtained mostly ...
Optimal and implementable transmission schemes for energy harvesting networks
Özçelik, Fatih Mehmet; Uysal Bıyıkoğlu, Elif; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2012)
Progress in energy harvesting technology and the increasing need for the energy efficient and environmentally friendly applications have called for reconsideration of communication systems. This reconsideration results in new problem formulations regarding the recent developments on energy harvesting systems. Recently, optimal strategies for various types of energy harvesting networks have been developed based on different harvesting models. This thesis reports the results of our research to develop the opt...
A Low-complexity, near-optimal scheduling policy for solving a restless multi-armed bandit problem occurring in a single-hop wireless network /
Gül, Ömer Melih; Uysal Bıyıkoğlu, Elif; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2014)
Power resources and battery lifetime are important issues for wireless networks such as wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To extend the battery lifetime, the recent advances in energy harvesting (EH) techniques propose an effective solution. EH nodes can harvest energy from environmental sources (e.g. solar, wind, vibrational, thermal) to power their sensing, computing and communication functions. In this thesis, we develop a solution to a scheduling problem under three scheduling scenarios. Firstly, we cons...
Energy effiecient wireless sensor network clustering algorithms and their real life performance evaluation
Uyar, Mehmet Erhan; Eren, Pekin Erhan; Koçyiğit, Altan; Department of Information Systems (2012)
Improvements in technology result in evolution of smart devices. One of such smart devices is wireless sensor nodes, which consist of a sensing board, a battery supply and a wireless antenna to transfer data. We can collect information from the environment by deploying thousands of these tiny smart devices. These devices can also be used to monitor natural habitats or used in giant machine parts for performance evolution. Energy efficient operation is an important issue for wireless sensor network design an...
Path planning and localization for mobile anchor based wireless sensor networks
Erdemir, Ecenaz; Tuncer, Temel Engin; Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (2017)
In wireless sensor networks, sensors with limited resources are distributed in a wide area. Localizing the sensors is an important problem. Anchor nodes with known positions are used for sensor localization. A simple and efficient way of generating anchor nodes is to use mobile anchors which have built-in GPS units. In this thesis, a single mobile anchor is used to traverse the region of interest to communicate with the sensor nodes and identify their positions. Therefore planning the best trajectory for th...
