Hourly wind measurements are the most important and commonly used data to estimate wave climate for Turkish coasts. There are several data sources, available for coastal engineers in Turkey, among which hourly wind measurements of Turkish coastal meteorological stations (TCMSs) are the most easily obtained and used data. However, due to several features and factors, the overall performance of TCMSs’ representability for onshore winds is low. Therefore, a need arises to search and use alternative wind data sources. ECMWF which provides 6 hourly wind data under various data sets is planned to be used, but at first the accuracy of ECMWF wind data is investigated. For this, ECMWF wind data is compared with land-based in-situ wind measurements at Sinop region, after the land-based wind data is carried to the same environment and elevation of ECWMF wind data. By smoothing the in-situ wind fields and increasing the data set with obtaining hourly wind data with linear connection of successive 6 hourly ECMWF winds, the wind changes are divided into certain groups and by looking into their correlations with the corresponding ECMWF wind data four different modification methods are achieved. At next stage, ECMWF wind speeds are modified by these four methods and the modifications which give the best correlations with in-situ wind are determined. In the final stage, these modification methods are applied to certain storms during which in-situ wave measurements are available. Using the modified ECMWF wind speeds, wave estimations are performed with a numerical model and the resulting wave heights are compared to in-situ wave heights. In addition, in order to have an idea about possible use of these modification methods for other coastal regions, a storm, during which wave measurements are available, is chosen at Hopa, Black Sea coast of Turkey.

Evaluation of wave statistics by using two wind data sets for Mediterranean Sea region in Turkey
Polat, Çağrı; Yalçıner, Ahmet Cevdet; Özyurt Tarakcıoğlu, Gülizar; Department of Civil Engineering (2015)
In Turkey, due to lack of on-site wave measurement data, design of coastal structures primary relies on wind measurements. Meteorology and ECMWF are the most commonly used data sources for the data sets, which provide valuable information about wind and wave characteristics. In the scope of this research, these two data sets are chosen to be analysed and compared according to their extreme and long term wave characteristics, in order to see different data sets impact on design process. In this study, seven ...
Estimation of total solar radiation from bright sunshine hours in Turkey
Taşdemiroğlu, Erol; Sever, Rita (Elsevier BV, 1989-12)
Measurements of total solar radiation and bright sunshine hours in six different climatological locations in Turkey are used to develop an Angstrom type equation. The coefficients are found for a linear equation from regression analysis for these locations. A simple overall equation, which yields the solar radiation in any location in Turkey for bright sunshine hours, is developed. The results of this equation, together with the results obtained from five similar, internationally accepted correlations, are ...
Evaluation of extreme wave statistics by using two wind data sets for Western Black Sea Region in Turkey /
Erol, Cevdet Onur; Özyurt Tarakcıoğlu, Gülizar; Ergin, Ayşen; Department of Civil Engineering (2014)
Design of coastal structures in Turkey depends on wind measurements since on-site wave measurements either do not exist or very limited. Two of the most commonly used wind data sets, meteorology and ECMWF, are decided to be compared and analyzed in terms of extreme wave characteristics to see their effects on design process when different data sets are utilized. For this purpose, seven points are selected along western coast of Black Sea in Turkey and both data sets are acquired from their respective source...
Comparison of the rural atmosphere aerosol compositions at different parts of Turkey
Doğan, Güray; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal; Department of Environmental Engineering (2005)
Long term data generated at four rural stations are compared to determine similarities and differences in aerosol compositions and factors contributing to observed differences at different regions in Turkey. The stations used in this study are located at Mediterranean coast (20 km to the west of Antalya city), Black Sea coast (20 km to the east of Amasra town), Central Anatolia (Çubuk, Ankara) and Northeastern part of the Anatolian Plateau (at Mt. Uludag). Data used in comparisons were generated in previous...
Analyses of atmospheric and marine observations along the Turkish coast
Tutsak, Ersin; Özsoy, Emin; Department of Physical Oceanography (2012)
Time series and spectral analyses are applied to meteorological data (wind velocity, air temperature, barometric pressure) and sea level measurements from a total of 13 monitoring stations along the Turkish Coast. Analyses of four-year time series identify main time scales of transport and motion while establishing seasonal characteristics, i.e. distinguishing, for instance, between winter storms and summer sea-breeze system. Marine flow data acquired by acoustic doppler current pro filers (ADCP) is also a...
