This study investigated Grade 7 students’ Science and Technology homework self-regulation in relation to science achievement and teachers’ homework practices. This was a nationwide study; 8318 seventh grade students and 344 Science and Technology teachers in Turkey participated. Participating students completed Student Homework Scale and Science Achievement Test while their Science and Technology teachers responded to the items in Teacher Homework Scale. Hierarchical Linear Modeling (HLM) analyses were conducted due to the nested structure of data. Results revealed that controlling for students’ prior-achievement and gender, students’ perceptions of homework quality and feedback provided on homework predicted students’ homework self-regulation (i.e., goal orientations in homework, homework procrastination, and homework strategy use) and science achievement. Moreover, pursuing high levels of mastery and low levels of work-avoidance goals, having low tendency to procrastinate homework, and using deep learning strategies during homework positively predicted science achievement. Class level analyses revealed that students in classes with higher average perceptions of homework quality were espoused to more mastery and performance goals and less work-avoidance goals; were less likely to delay homework; and used more homework management and deep learning strategies than students in other classes. Besides, students’ shared perceptions of homework feedback positively predicted students’ homework management and deep learning strategy use, and achievement. Additionally, students in classes with higher teacher support for deep learning strategy use performed better on the science achievement test than did students in other classes.

The Effect of Guided-Inquiry Instruction on 6th Grade Turkish Students' Achievement, Science Process Skills, and Attitudes Toward Science
Koksal, Ela Ayse; Berberoglu, Giray (2014-01-02)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of guided-inquiry approach in science classes over existing science and technology curriculum in developing content-based science achievement, science process skills, and attitude toward science of grade level 6 students in Turkey. Non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used to investigate the treatment effect. There were 162 students in the experimental group and 142 students in the control group. Both the experimental and co...
Multilevel investigations of students’ cognitive and affective learning outcomes and their relationships with perceived classroom learning environment and teacher effectiveness
Yerdelen, Sündüs; Sungur Vural, Semra; Department of Elementary Education (2013)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the interrelations among 7th grade students’ Science Achievement, self-regulation in science class, perceptions of classroom learning environment, and science teachers’ beliefs and occupational well-being. This was a nationwide cross-sectional study in which 8198 seventh grade students and their 372 science teachers in Turkey participated. Several Hierarchical Linear Modelling analyses were employed to analyze the student-level and teacher-level variables. While ...
DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF SCIENCE HOMEWORK SCALE FOR MIDDLE-SCHOOL STUDENTS
Taş, Yasemin; Sungur, Semra; Öztekin, Ceren (2016-04-01)
The aim of this study was to develop and validate Science Homework Scale (SHS) which assesses middle-school (grades 6-8) students' perceptions of teachers' homework practices and homework self-regulation in science. Students' perceptions of teachers' homework practices included homework quality and feedback on homework while students' homework self-regulation consisted of homework goal orientations (i.e. mastery, performance, and work-avoidance), homework strategy use (i.e. deep learning and management), an...
The importance of teacher-student interpersonal relationships for Turkish students' attitudes towards science
Telli, Sibel; den Brok, Perry; Çakıroğlu, Jale (Informa UK Limited, 2010-01-01)
The purpose of this study was to examine associations between Turkish high school students' perceptions of their science teachers' interpersonal behaviour and their attitudes towards science. Students' perceptions of the teacher-student interpersonal relationship were mapped with the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI), which uses two relational dimensions: influence and proximity. Data on Students' subject-related attitudes were collected with the Test of Science Related Attitudes (TOSRA). A total o...
