The writings of urban theorists that have studied urban settings as fields of ingenuity, and utopias that propose the possible-other in parallel lines go back to very early periods in history. However, works dwelling on the influence of such imaginary constructs on actual spatial practices, in the form of architectural output, per se, are comparably new. Since the appearance of the very first theoretical work on the relationship between utopia and architecture, barely a century has passed. During this period, theory in this area has developed and expanded rapidly. However, due to a lack of any structure for providing a comparable base and a lack of consensus on what utopia really means, this theory did not indicate a consistently constructed developmental growth. This yielded a great accumulation of unintegrated knowledge, impossible to comprehend in its totality. Fitting into this gap, this work dwells on and manifests the different patterns of the relationship between the utopian and actual practices of architecture. The aim is to survey the varieties of these relationships in their broadest sense to derive potentialities for contemporary practices.

An Ontological inquiry on potentials of criticality and conceptualization of program in architecture
Kızıl, Sinan Cem; Sargın, Güven Arif; Department of Architecture (2017)
The relation between architecture and social change is one of the key themes in historical discourse of architectural theory. The tradition of criticality has been consolidated after enlightenment and it caused distrust towards norms of architecture. Even though this tradition of criticality eventually turns to its roots and criticises the ideals of enlightenment in postmodern discourses, it is clear that namely postmodern architectures still subjected to criticism similar to their modernist predecessors. Historical contuinity: three modernist masters, their precedents and descendants
Mollazadeh, Aslı; Balamir, Aydan; Department of Architecture (2014)
The aim of this thesis is to uncover the relation between the concept of historical continuity and architectural modernism. Modernism in architecture has often been conceived as a movement that rejects history. The buildings of modernist masters have been seen alien to their environments and the cultural values of the society. Although there have been many studies disproving this widespread opinion, the continuing effects of modernist works on today's architectural environment haven't been fully understood....
Reading Architectural Utopia(nism)s: A Proposal
Güneri Söğüt, Gizem Deniz (Middle East Technical University, Faculty of Architecture, 2019-01-01)
The writings of urban theorists who have studied utopias that propose a counter-space as the basis for a counter-society go back to very early periods in history. However, works dwelling on the influence of such theoretical constructs on actual space, in forms of architectural outputs per se, are comparably new. Since the revival of the very first theoretical work on the relationship between utopia and architecture, barely a century has passed. Processing materiality through architectural information
Dai, Meral Cana; Savaş Sargın, Ayşen; Department of Architecture (2015)
Constituting a fundamental ground for the discipline of architecture, the concept of materiality is the central consideration of this thesis. Besides a particular set of materials by which architectural production made out of, the literal aspect, materiality also refers to all architectonic qualities that form the physical constitution of an architectural product, the referential aspect. Taking referential aspect as its basis, this thesis considers architecture as an “organizational system” and approaches m...
Exploring the potential of mat-building for the creation of universally designed environments
Eren, Yasemin; Aközer, Emel; Department of Architecture (2004)
The goal of this study is to reread the strategies of formal organization in architecture, which are called أmat-buildingؤ and أmat-urbanismؤ, exploring their potential to contribute to the creation of universally designed built environments in the 21st century. The idea of mat-building was first delineated by Alison Smithson in 1974, in her article أHow to Recognize and Read Mat-Building,ؤ by means of its traditional and modern examples. The concept of universal design was first used in 1970̕s and reinterp...
