The aim in this thesis is to investigate the policy preferences and policy evaluations of two main Turkish Cypriot business groups, Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Commerce and Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Industry, with regards to the labour market in North Cyprus and relations with Turkish state and capital in the post-Annan Plan period in North Cyprus. Thus, I have resorted to the method of in-depth interview in order to penetrate into the mindset of Turkish Cypriot business groups’ officials in detail. My findings reflect that, while the transformation in the economic relations between Turkey and North Cyprus in the post-2004 process have been considered to be favorable by Turkish Cypriot business groups, their impact upon articulating the required revisions are relatively low. Moreover, Turkish Cypriot business groups, both because of their general approval towards the transformation in the post-2004 process and their weakness vis-a-vis the leverage of Turkish state upon the economic policy-making in North Cyprus, have preferred to be more reconciliatory and cautious in this sphere. On the other hand, regarding the labour market aspect of the discussion, Turkish Cypriot business groups act with the understanding of creating a “business-friendly” environment in terms of reducing the labour costs and obtaining the required type of labour force. Unlike the former sphere, their discourse in terms of policy preferences and impact upon the different aspects of labour market are more confident and clear-cut.

Hamit, Meltem; Erdoğan, Necmi; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2008)
This thesis explores popular perception of 'Turkish Cypriotness' in relation to Greek Cypriots and Türkiyeliler in the framework of struggling political discourses proposing conflicting identities to the population in the northern part of Cyprus. Purpose of the study is to understand dominant elements in self-representations of 'native' Turkish Cypriots in the context of relatively new reality, namely, the partition of the island and immigration from Turkey. In other words, this study focuses on images of '...
The Annan Plan for Cyprus as a Prisoner's Dilemma Game
Koca-Atabey, Mujde (2009-06-01)
The Annan Plan for Cyprus was presented to the Greek and Turkish Cypriots for approval by simultaneous referendums held on 24.04.2004. The plan was anticipating a unified Cyprus. It was rejected by the Greek side so could not put into affect. This paper analyses the Annan Plan in relation to the Prisoner's Dilemma Game from a psychological perspective. It is concluded that contrary to what the dilemma suggests, it is always advantageous for the Turkish to cooperate. The fundamental elements of the cooperati...
The property issue in the Cyprus question
Pekdemir, Zeynep Ferah; Polat, Necati; Department of International Relations (2008)
This thesis aims to provide an evaluation of the property aspect of the Cyprus problem. The 'property issue' is an important aspect of the problem because it concerns the individual human rights and interests of a large population on both sides of the island. The bulk of the thesis is then formed by the problem of prop...
Strategic National/Ethnic Identity Constructions: The Northern Cyprus Case
Akfirat, Serap Arslan; Öner Özkan, Bengi (2010-12-01)
The present documentary study investigates how political parties in Northern Cyprus define the national/ethnic identity of Turkish Cypriots in the service of their own collective projects within the context of Cyprus' unification (the unification of Turkish and Greek Cypriots under the roof of United Cyprus vs. keeping the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus/TRNC independent). For this purpose, all the official documents of the two political parties, namely Turkish Republican Party (CTP) and National Unity ...
