Paleobathymetric evolution of the miocene deposits of Gömbe and Aksu Basins, Antalya, Turkey

2018
Şiş, Fatih Seçkin
The Late Cenozoic Antalya Basins, located at the eastern part of the Beydağları Platform, within the Isparta Angle, unconformably developed on Mesozoic autochthonous carbonate platforms in the western Taurides. Aksu Basin developed in the inner part of the Isparta Angle and bounded by Aksu Thrust at the east. Gömbe Basin located at the western limb of the Isparta Angle and developed as a foreland basin in front of the Lycin Nappes on the Beydağları Platform. During their evolution, these basins experienced important bathymetric changes possibly due to vertical motions and variation in the sediment supply. This study provides a detailed analysis of paleobathymetic evolution of these basins. The conducted paleobathmetric study involves determination of the depositional depth of these basins by using foraminiferal fauna. It is based on the ratio of abundance of planktonic versus benthic foraminifera, which is related to the water depth. Percentage of planktonic foraminifera to total foraminifer population (%P) increases from shallow to deep water. However, some of the benthic foraminifera species are directly affected by the oxygen level of the bottom waters, rather than paleobathymetry, and are regarded as stress markers, hence they are discarded in the calculations of %P. In addition, carbonate dissolution of the foraminifera has the potential for miscalculations, since planktonic foraminifera are more prone to dissolution then the benthic ones. Nevertheless, recognition and determination of benthic species would be adequate for overcoming this complication. At the end, the obtained quantitative results must be verified and validated qualitatively using specific benthic depth markers. Depositional depth of the Aksu Basin were shallowing as a general trend, and rate of sedimentation exceeded the rate of subsidence in the middle part of the section. For most levels, calculated depths of Gömbe basins indicated depositional depths around thousand meters, contrary to the high sedimentation rates as indicated by turbiditic facies of the basin infills. The proto-Paratethys Sea covered a vast area extending from the Mediterranean Tethys to the Tarim Basin in western China during Cretaceous and early Paleogene. Climate modelling and proxy studies suggest that Asian aridification has been governed by westerly moisture modulated by fluctuations of the proto-Paratethys Sea. Transgressive and regressive episodes of the proto-Paratethys Sea have been previously recognized but their timing, extent and depositional environments remain poorly constrained. This hamp...
The Upper Cretaceous intrusive rocks with extensive crustal contribution in Hacimahmutusagi Area (Aksaray/Turkey)
Köksal, Serhat (Central Library of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, 2019-06-01)
The Hacimahmutusagi area (Aksaray/Turkey) is located in the western part of the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC). Gneiss and marble compose the basement units, while intrusive rocks are gabbros and granitoids. The pegmatitic hornblende gabbros contain pegmatitic to fine-grained hornblendes, plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and accessory opaque minerals. The fine-grained gabbros, on the other hand, are composed of plagioclase, hornblende, and biotite as major components whereas the apatite and opaque ...

Western Anatolia is a complex assemblage of terranes, including the Sakarya Terrane and the Tauride-Anatolide Platform that collided during the late Cretaceous and Palaeogene (80-25 Ma) after the closure of the Izmir-Ankara Ocean. Determining the precise timing at which this ocean closed is particularly important to test kinematic reconstructions and geodynamic models of the Mediterranean region, and the chronology of suturing and its mechanisms remain controversial. Here, we document the Cretaceous-Eocene ...

The Beywhir-Hoyran Nappes, including Mesozoic carbonate platform rocks, deepsea sediments, and ophiolite-related units, crop out extensively on the western limb of the Isparta Angle in the Central Taurides, Turkey. The ophiolite-related rocks are represented by variably serpentinized harzburgitic mantle tectonites, tectonically underlain by a subophiolitic metamorphic sole and melange. The harzburgitic mantle tectonites and metamorphic sole are intruded by undeformed isolated dikes. Protoliths of the metamo...
Tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the continental miocene basins in Southwest Anatolia
Koç, Ayten; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Van Hinsbergen, Douwe J. J.; Department of Geological Engineering (2013)
The Tauride range in southern Turkey is flanked and overlain by Neogene sedimentary basins. To the south and on top of the high range, these basins are mainly marine, whereas poorly studied intra-montane basins dominated by continental deposits are exposed to the north. In this study, the stratigraphy and structure of these continental basins which includes Altınapa, Yalvaç and Ilgın Basins are studied. Their stratigraphy of these basins displays poorly expressed fining upwards sequences of fluvio-lacustrin...
