It is a general consent that virtual reality technology will contribute in education in all levels in future, and yet the contemporary literature shows that how virtual reality can affect the learning especially in architectural education is not a clear concept. Deriving from constructive learning, problem-based learning, immersive technologies, and intended learning outcomes in learning how to design in human-scale, an immersive virtual learning environment was implemented within an appropriate design/learning activity. Immersive experience of bodily interactions and problem solving process were focused. A novel method of evaluation was also developed over this synthesis, and an evaluation rubric was created based on the SOLO taxonomy. According to the evaluation method, a before-and-after test was conducted within a case study involving a particular scenario of design exercise and interviews. Results showed that the proposed immersive virtual learning environment might provide an enhancement on novice architecture students’ learning on how to design in human-scale, in a scope where short-term exposure and short-term design exercises are issued. The proposed method of evaluation provided the opportunity to explore and assess causal relations between the observed advancements of students and the use of particular immersive features. Case study’s scenario which moves students out of their comfort zone in terms of their familiarity with the design requirements and with the provided type of experience was found to be crucial in applicability of the proposed evaluation method.

Digital architecture as the extension of physical spaces : asymtote's New York Stock Exchange virtual reality environment
Ayoğlu, Halil; Yalınay, Şebnem; Department of Architecture (2005)
The aim of this thesis is to develop an understanding of digital architecture as an extension to the physical spaces. The thesis claims that Virtual Reality Environments (VREs) coexist, supplement, support and extend the physical environments. VREs enable the users to deal with manipulable, multi-dimensional, interactive digital environment. Asymptote2s New York Stock Exchange Three-Dimensional Trading Floor (NYSE 3DTF) VRE is a significant example to analyze digital architecture in this perspective. The 3D...
A new game-based immersive virtual learning tool for perceiving behaviour of structures: structurepuzzlevr .
Güney, Ere; Sorguç, Arzu Gönenç.; Department of Architecture (2019)
It is widely accepted that virtual reality technologies will be used effectively used in architecture education as it is in other educations. However, according to the literature, there is a few examples of how immersive interactive virtual reality can be used in structural design education. StructurePuzzleVR is a game supported by digital game-based learning and surrounding-interactive virtual reality technology, designed to comprehend the behavior of structures under various situations by the help of simu...
Exploring the potential of mat-building for the creation of universally designed environments
Eren, Yasemin; Aközer, Emel; Department of Architecture (2004)
The goal of this study is to reread the strategies of formal organization in architecture, which are called أmat-buildingؤ and أmat-urbanismؤ, exploring their potential to contribute to the creation of universally designed built environments in the 21st century. The idea of mat-building was first delineated by Alison Smithson in 1974, in her article أHow to Recognize and Read Mat-Building,ؤ by means of its traditional and modern examples. The concept of universal design was first used in 1970̕s and reinterp...
An assessment of the architectural representation process within the computational design environment
Uçar, Başak; Mennan, Zeynep; Department of Architecture (2006)
With the introduction of a computational design environment, architectural design and representation processes witness a radical transition from the analog to the digital medium, that may be asserted to initiate a paradigm shift affecting both. In this new design environment, extending the instrumentality of computer-aided processes to the generative use of computational tools and procedures, architectural design and representation processes are subject to mutual alterations, challenged with computational d...
Ideology, subject, architecture: the transformation of architectural theory and the architect-subject in the 21st century
Çavdar, Rabia Çiğdem; Sargın, Güven Arif; Department of Architecture (2018)
This thesis will concentrate on how architecture is reproduced by ideology to structure/constitute the mind. I think that dominant ideologies ceased to structure the physical world (or perhaps it is easier for them to play over the physical world - power already has done it) and their new target is the human mind, where they have the potential to make radical inceptions. This thesis asks the question of how architecture affects the human mind with the transformation of late capitalism: how late capitalism u...
