It is widely accepted that virtual reality technologies will be used effectively used in architecture education as it is in other educations. However, according to the literature, there is a few examples of how immersive interactive virtual reality can be used in structural design education. StructurePuzzleVR is a game supported by digital game-based learning and surrounding-interactive virtual reality technology, designed to comprehend the behavior of structures under various situations by the help of simulations. In this way, an immersive virtual learning space is created in conjunction with design and learning activity. StructurePuzzleVR immerses students with as many senses as possible as three-dimensional motion, sound, touch and gravity simulations. Moreover, StructurePuzzleNotes is created as a written format of StructurePuzzleVR by isolating its immersive features. Thus, StructurePuzzleNotes is similar to the traditional structure education method used as a control group tool. Two groups of second year undergraduate architecture students are subjected to a pre-test consisting of long-span structure design questions. The groups are trained in different tools, then the post-tests are applied. According to SOLO Taxonomy evaluation, although the pre-results are in the same level, students who are taken to StructurePuzzleVR design more stable and various structures than the control group. Moreover, according tovi questionnaire; students who are taken into virtual reality education enjoyed more. The results show that an immersive virtual reality game can provide a concrete and meaningful experience in learning structural behaviors and designing structures, and show that this technology can be used more effectively in architectural education.

Implementing and evaluating an immersive virtual learning environment for learning how to design in human-scale
Sönmez, Orkun; Sorguç, Arzu; Department of Building Science in Architecture (2018)
It is a general consent that virtual reality technology will contribute in education in all levels in future, and yet the contemporary literature shows that how virtual reality can affect the learning especially in architectural education is not a clear concept. Deriving from constructive learning, problem-based learning, immersive technologies, and intended learning outcomes in learning how to design in human-scale, an immersive virtual learning environment was implemented within an appropriate design/lear...
The Role of VR as a New Game Changer in Computational Design Education
Sorguç, Arzu; Özgenel, Çağlar Fırat; Katipoğlu, Mert Ozan; Rasulzade, Ramin (2017-09-22)
With the rapid advances in technology, virtual reality(VR) re-emerged as an affordable technology providing new potentials for virtual learning environments(VLE). Within the scope of this study, firstly a general perspective on potentials of VR to create an appropriate VLE is put forward regarding the potentials related with learning modalities. Then, VR as a VLE in architectural education is discussed and utilization of VR is revisited considering the fundamentals of education as how to enhance skills rega...
A 3D virtual environment for training soccer referees
Gulec, Ulas; Yilmaz, Murat; İşler, Veysi; O'Connor, Rory V.; Clarke, Paul M. (Elsevier BV, 2019-05-01)
Emerging digital technologies are being used in many ways by and in particular virtual environments provide new opportunities to gain experience on real-world phenomena without having to live the actual real-world experiences. In this study, a quantitative research approach supported by expert validation interviews was conducted to determine the availability of virtual environments in the training of soccer referees. The aim is to design a virtual environment for training purposes, representing a real-life ...
Appraisal of augmented reality technologies for supporting industrial design practices
Topal, Basak; Şener Pedgley, Bahar (2015-01-01)
Having become widespread and easily accessible with the rapid advancements in technology, augmented reality (AR) offers potential uses for industrial designers, especially for design students. Some design stages, during which traditional tools and methods are used, may not fully communicate the total experience that a product offers. AR can provide a digital layer in which designers can present information and make their presentations more interactive. With this aim in mind, design practice fieldwork with t...
Digital architecture as the extension of physical spaces : asymtote's New York Stock Exchange virtual reality environment
Ayoğlu, Halil; Yalınay, Şebnem; Department of Architecture (2005)
The aim of this thesis is to develop an understanding of digital architecture as an extension to the physical spaces. The thesis claims that Virtual Reality Environments (VREs) coexist, supplement, support and extend the physical environments. VREs enable the users to deal with manipulable, multi-dimensional, interactive digital environment. Asymptote2s New York Stock Exchange Three-Dimensional Trading Floor (NYSE 3DTF) VRE is a significant example to analyze digital architecture in this perspective. The 3D...
