In this thesis, I examine the Gezi uprising and the way in which it positions itself vis-a vis the AKP hegemony and its neoliberal policies. For this purpose, I trace the concept of hegemony in a Gramscian and post-Marxist sense since these approaches evaluate social movements and civic actions with respect to the hegemonic struggle. I criticize post Marxist perspectives for their limitations in describing the components of social movements and the forms of struggle. I also problematize the transformation of capitalism and social movements especially after the capitalist crisis of the 1970’s. In this sense, I examine the literature on new social movements and contemporary social movements from a class perspective. I argue that the Gezi protests of 2013 were directly related to the AKP hegemony within the framework of Gramscian ‘hegemony’. For this purpose, I explore the notion of ‘neoliberalism’ with reference to the processes of commodification, flexibilization of labor, privatization of land and social policies that were directly related to the depoliticisation of poverty and the concept of neoliberal populism. Lastly, I problematize the Gezi uprising by exploring its components, forms of protest and outcomes. All in all, this thesis mainly aims to understand the relationship between the AKP hegemony and the Gezi protests and problematizes the ways in which the protests were able to influence the AKP hegemony.

Katırcı, Güldeniz; Aslan Akman, Canan; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2006)
The main purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate whether or not the rapid rise and decline of radical nationalism between 1999 and 2002 elections may be related to an ideological identity crisis of the Nationalist Action Party. In this context, the focus will be on the transformation of the nationalist ideology, “nationalisms” in the Ottoman Empire, Kemalist/official nationalism, and transformation of Turkish nationalism to a political party ideology and its further transformation in Turkey. The reason for ...
The democratic deficit of the European Union : an institutionalist approach
Kodakcı, Devrim; Gitmez, Ali; Department of European Studies (2004)
This thesis analyses the democratic deficit problem of the European Union in a historical context. As the Union develops from a purely economic community into political and social entity, its democratic credentials are put into question. In this thesis, it is argued that technocratic and elitist institutional structure of the Union causes this democratic deficit. Therefore, in order to rectify it and make the Union more legitimate in the eyes of its citizens, the institutions of the Union should be re-struc...
The Evolution and professionalization of economic thought from the late Ottoman empire to the Turkish Republic: the case of İbrahim Fazil Pelin
Aslanmirza, Burak; Zorlu Durukan, Şefika Akile; Department of History (2018)
The Anglo-Ottoman Trade Convention of 1838 – usually regarded as a milestone in the Ottoman Empire’s integration process to capitalism and the liberal world – also presents a landmark for the germination of Ottoman intellectuals’ interest in European economic thought and the acceleration of intellectual discussions on the subject thanks to the rise of private press. However, the transformation of economic thought from being the object of intellectual interest to being a separate discipline, accordingly its ...
The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and the Armenian foreign policy : 1988-2007
Şirin, Esil; Tanrısever, Oktay Fırat; Department of International Relations (2007)
This thesis analyses the impact of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on the foreign policy of Armenia. It could be claimed that Armenia’s relations with the other countries have been shaped by the Nagorno-Karabakh problem. The thesis demonstrates that because of this conflict, Armenian foreign policy has become more dependent on Russia and the Armenian diaspora in Russia, France and the United States despite its desire to be an independent state. Although Levon Ter-Petrossian and Robert Kocharian have advocated...
