In this thesis, it is aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding with regards to the rise of populism in Britain, particularly in the years between 2010 and 2015 in the context of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP). Firstly in this respect, the concept of populism is investigated on in a detailed way; and its growing appearance in British politics is discussed in detail. In order to understand the rise of populism in British politics in the context of UKIP between 2010-2015, the enabling conditions which have created suitable political and social environment for a right-wing populist party, UKIP, were determined and examined. As a following step, UKIP’s populist political agendas as response to those enabling conditions were presented and discussed. In the end, it is found out that the rise of populism in Britain in the context of UKIP between 2010 and 2015 is a result of unprecedented harmony and connection between enabling conditions and UKIP’s responses to those conditions in this specific timeframe through featured populist political agendas. Additionally, the overall impact of the rise of populism through UKIP on British politics is evaluated in the thesis; and it is demonstrated that UKIP’s rise has indirectly change the British mainstream political party system by affecting major parties’ policy choices and internal dynamics; also started to shape existing public agendas of British electorate.

Katırcı, Güldeniz; Aslan Akman, Canan; Department of Political Science and Public Administration (2006)
The main purpose of the thesis is to demonstrate whether or not the rapid rise and decline of radical nationalism between 1999 and 2002 elections may be related to an ideological identity crisis of the Nationalist Action Party. In this context, the focus will be on the transformation of the nationalist ideology, “nationalisms” in the Ottoman Empire, Kemalist/official nationalism, and transformation of Turkish nationalism to a political party ideology and its further transformation in Turkey. The reason for ...
The evolution of 'new' Labour's European Policy : Europe as the 'New Jerusalem'
Keser, Hasan; Yalman, Osman Galip; Department of European Studies (2006)
British Labour Party’s attitudes and policies towards European integration have historically oscillated between varying degrees of support for concrete integration steps and obstinate opposition to it. A major and pronounced volte-face on European policy occurred after 1983 and the aim of this study is to locate the causes of this shift in European policy and its subsequent course under ‘New’ Labour period. The causes and motivations are searched within the general transformation of the party and they are a...
The Impact of EU-based Populism on Turkey-EU Relations
Alpan, Başak Zeynep (Informa UK Limited, 2019-10-02)
The May 2019 EP elections once again highlighted the current cultural backlash throughout Europe against progressive values such as cosmopolitanism and multiculturalism, which impacts on the 'future of Europe' debate, raising important questions for the evolution of Turkey-EU relations. Even though Turkey is no longer a hot topic in EU political parlance and public opinion, opposition to Turkish EU membership continues in the form of nativism, particularly with reference to the issues of immigration and Isl...
The deterritorialization of home and identity in Brian Chikwava’s harare north and Chris Cleave’s the other hand
Kaygısız, İsmail; Öztabak Avcı, Elif; Department of English Language Teaching (2020)
The issue of migrancy has been spotlighted in the millenial London novel, in which there are many different approaches to issues of multiculturalism, both affirmative and pessimistic, Britishness and otherness. Moreover, these issues entail a questioning of the notion of identity and home that are exposed to transformation in the course of migration. The in-betweenness in the sense of identity and home can best be explained through the concept of deterritorialization. The aim of this thesis is to analyze co...
Party-level euroscepticism of the radical populist political parties in the european union member states: the cases of the united kingdom independence party (UKİP) and the coalition of the radical left (SYRİZA)
Özbey, Ebru Ece; Şenyuva, Özgehan; Department of European Studies (2016)
In this thesis, I investigate the strategic and ideological aspects of the Euroscepticisms of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and the Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA) as examples of radical populist parties which have been on the rise in Europe for the last three decades –especially since the 2014 European Parliamentary elections. I contest the way these parties are represented in media and academia, which is often alarmist and devoid of nuance, and claim that deeming these parties as a t...
