The idea of new architecture in old settings is based on the concept of continuity in history. Ensuring this continuity and creating appropriate coexistence of old and new buildings are difficult tasks because of the changes that have taken place in architectural attitudes, building materials, and construction techniques. After briefly exploring different approaches developed to fulfil this challenging task and their applications, this thesis focuses on buildings that are designed by interpreting the existing heritage in different proximities to the building site. The study argues that the interpretation of the historical built environment and the use of these interpretations in the design of the new building in abstracted or transformed forms in the scale of architectural element (like wall, window and tower) can be the method of creating association with the related historical context. In this way, the architect is expected to design the new with reference to the historical buildings and their architectural properties, like style, material and construction technique. To exemplify this method and its principles, buildings of Zumthor (Kolumba Museum), Böhm (Town Hall), Siza (Blocks of Flats), Moneo (City Hall Extension) and Piano (Centre Culturel Jean Marie Tjibaou) are chosen as cases. The formal relationships of the buildings with their historical urban context are examined. The sources of inspiration of new buildings and the features of the historical buildings in the context that are adopted by the architects of the new buildings are detected. Architect‟s interpretation degree of these features and their conformity with the historical buildings according to volumetric formation and façade configuration are also evaluated. At the end of the study, it is seen that the results of these evaluations overlap with the main idea of the thesis. Beyond mere imitation or ignorance of the historical buildings in the vi context, seeing them as a tool and starting point in design allows the creation of unique and compatible solutions and site specific designs.

An Ontological inquiry on potentials of criticality and conceptualization of program in architecture
Kızıl, Sinan Cem; Sargın, Güven Arif; Department of Architecture (2017)
The relation between architecture and social change is one of the key themes in historical discourse of architectural theory. The tradition of criticality has been consolidated after enlightenment and it caused distrust towards norms of architecture. Even though this tradition of criticality eventually turns to its roots and criticises the ideals of enlightenment in postmodern discourses, it is clear that namely postmodern architectures still subjected to criticism similar to their modernist predecessors. I...
The dialogue of type and model in architecture
Tunçbaş, Adil; Cengizkan, Ali; Department of Architecture (2006)
The idea of type has always been a crucial factor in the field of architecture. Not only it works as a dominator in the design process of architecture but also it supplies the certain ways through which architecture communicates with the observer. In order to understand the interaction between architecture and the observer the idea of type appears as a critical point. This study will be an attempt to understand the dialogue of type and model in architecture. Throughout the research Anthony Vidler’s article ...
The Transformation of architectural narrative from literature to cinema: differences, continuities and limits of representation in different media
Hacıömeroğlu, Türkan Nihan; Güzer, Celal Abdi; Department of Architecture (2015)
The prosperity of an architectural design cannot be evaluated only by its physical functionality, but requires the consideration of its fictional and representative power. The latter feature of architecture is an essential component of design both as an input and as an outcome. In fact, this feature is the main reason that architecture is an inseparable part of any fiction, that is related with people let it be a story, a movie, a commercial or a political discourse, etc. Besides being a sole part, architec...
Historical contuinity: three modernist masters, their precedents and descendants
Mollazadeh, Aslı; Balamir, Aydan; Department of Architecture (2014)
The aim of this thesis is to uncover the relation between the concept of historical continuity and architectural modernism. Modernism in architecture has often been conceived as a movement that rejects history. The buildings of modernist masters have been seen alien to their environments and the cultural values of the society. Although there have been many studies disproving this widespread opinion, the continuing effects of modernist works on today's architectural environment haven't been fully understood....
Environmental aesthetics of the rural architectural tradition in the Mediterranean highlander settlement: the case study of Ürünlü
Kavas, Kemal Reha; Erzen, Jale Adile; Department of History of Architecture (2009)
This thesis formulates a conceptual framework to account for the rural architectural traditions. The proposal is presented by referring to Ürünlü, a Mediterranean highland settlement in Southwestern Turkey. The thesis' basic assumption is the environmental coherence of the traditional rural culture. Environmental aesthetics provides the conceptual basis through which architectural elements of the environmental coherence are investigated. Environmental aesthetics enhances the inclusive conceptions of "enviro...
