Product personalization has potentials in prolonging product lifetimes through strengthening person-product relationship. While designing products for sustainability, the factors such as local production, maintenance, repair, re-use, upgrade, etc. also need to be considered. In this context, this study focuses on the ways of empowering people in the design process through product personalization at the local level, and the implications of this for product design for sustainability. The study adopts research through design approach and generative research is integrated into this methodology. The study consists of two main components which are the preliminary study and the generative research. The preliminary study phase 1 and 2 explore the products personalized by people and the personalization process through semi-structured interviews and an online questionnaire conducted with people who personalize their products (e.g. furniture, electronics, etc.), respectively. In the generative research phase 1, a half-way lighting design exploration was developed and it was personalized by various participants in a design workshop and follow-up generative sessions. In the second and third phases of the generative research, two lighting design explorations were developed based on two diverse design scenarios, focusing on product personalization with the use of post-use materials and product personalization for practicing a craft skill, respectively. These were personalized by the participants addressed in these scenarios in the generative sessions. The study reveals the dimensions of personalization important for sustainability and their interrelationships, sustainable design considerations for product personalization, and the ways of incorporating product personalization into design research for people's empowerment.

Exploration of the ways of empowering people in the design process through product personalization for prolonged product lifetimes
OZAN, EZGİ; Doğan, Çağla (2017-11-10)
Product personalization has many potentials in extending product lifetimes and sustainable consumption, through strengthening the emotional bond between people and their products. In addition, production and post-use of products need to be considered in the design process to develop design solutions in line with sustainability principles. Product personalization is defined in the study as, a process during which a product's aesthetic and functional attributes are defined, adapted or modified by the user dur...
An Inquiry on sustainability and consumption through single-use disposable products
Özer, Damla; Börekçi, Naz Ayşe Güzide Z.; Department of Industrial Design (2017)
The research area of this study is sustainability, material culture, and sustainable consumption, and in this context it deals with the example of single-use disposable products. This thesis aims to explore the reasons for and implications of widespread use of single-use disposable products (SUDPs) in terms of sustainable consumption; to understand the underlying patterns of and challenges for responsible consumers` experiences with SUDPs; and to investigate how responsible consumers relate themselves to th...
Designing for sound as a component of product experience: development of a novel conceptual tool
Benli, Koray; Pedgley, Owaın Francıs; Department of Industrial Design (2015)
As a medium of interaction between users and products, the sound emitted by a product plays an important role in people's product experiences. However, in order to enhance user-product interaction, the design of auditory features of products is generally overlooked in the course of design process. This is in comparison with thesignificant effort spent by designers for the visual features of products. In this context, the purpose of this thesis is to explore the current and future practice of product sound d...
SOUND DATA AS DESIGN MATERIAL: A MULTISENSORIAL AND INTERACTIVE TRANSFORMATION PROCESS FOR MATERIALIZING PERSONALLY MEANINGFUL DATA INTO MEANINGFUL ARTIFACTS
Alpay, Efe; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2023-1-17)
Emotional connections with the products increase product lifetimes, thus decreasing waste and providing prolonged value. In creating this emotional connection, personally meaningful data (sonic memories) offer benefits that cannot be obtained by any other means in determining the meaning and value of a personal artifact by adopting the personalization approach. However, adaptation and mass-customization that can be attained with conventional design and production methods are far from exploiting these potent...
Sustainability considerations on effective use of resources for small household appliances
Oğur, Dilruba; Doğan, Çağla; Department of Industrial Design (2014)
The use phase of many products’ lifecycle has significant impacts on the environment that are largely determined by the use behaviour. Yet, those impacts mostly remain unnoticed, since individuals are unaware of the potential environmental consequences of their everyday practices and interactions with products, and have insufficient means to find them out. This study explores and examines use patterns and behaviours throughout the use phase of the small household appliances, particularly electric tea makers...
