The Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry has recently been altering the ways of managing its resources. Knowledge is considered to be among the most precious of these resources. Knowledge is a critical factor in choosing the right projects, preparing the winning bids and successfully realizing the projects. It is also a critical factor for organizations because of the fact that - due to its nature that it exists as tacit or explicit, or in between - it is hard to record and reuse. This paper provides a pilot study in order to investigate the knowledge management issue in the practice of architecture. The study has been carried out in the Çankaya district of Ankara. Face-to-face interviews have been carried out with the head architects of 15 architectural offices. The subject domain is assumed to be experiencing the problems such as managing knowledge at a strategic level. This is due to the facts that the amount and importance of tacit knowledge is significant and communication of this knowledge to other parties is the responsibility of the architectural partners. The survey found out that management of architectural knowledge is considered to be beneficial for the overall productivity of architectural offices. However, challenges such as lack of standard procedures and low profit margins in the AEC industry render knowledge management to be less effective on overall profit and innovation in design.

Exploring knowledge management in the practice of architecture: a pilot study from the Turkish capital
Kayaçetin, Nuri Cihan; Tanyer, Ali Murat; Restoration in Department of Architecture (2009)
Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry has recently been altering the ways of managing its resources. Assessing Information Technology Use in Organizations: Developing a Framework
Sezgin, Emre; Özkan Yıldırım, Sevgi (2011-10-07)
Increasing use of current and developing information technologies (IT) within business and production processes is a required transformation to survive in the market. However. IT should be well-managed to be adapted by an organization as a whole. This study proposes a new model for the assessment of IT use in organizations. The aim is to assist decision making processes in information technology management through exploring strength and weaknesses of organization on IT tools and applications. The model has ...
Exploring the enablers and barriers of circular economy and blockchain adoption in the construction industry
Şahin, Ufuk; Atasoy Özcan, Güzide; Department of Civil Engineering (2023-1-26)
Due to the take, make, and dispose of principle, which is the result of the linear economy model, massive natural resource exploitation of the construction industry (CI) results in various undesired environmental side effects. The circular economy (CE) concept emerged to alleviate negative impacts and change linear processes with circular ones. In this context, the successful use of CE in the construction industry can significantly contribute to remarkable reductions in gas emissions, massive natural resour...
Capturing knowledge in construction projects: Knowledge platform for contractors
Kivrak, Serkan; Arslan, Gokhan; Dikmen Toker, İrem; Birgönül, Mustafa Talat (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2008-04-01)
Managing knowledge effectively is critical to the survival and advance of a company, especially in project-based industries such as construction. However, capturing knowledge in construction projects is a tedious task, as knowledge is usually experience based, tacit, and hard to pass on to others. In this study, a survey was carried out among eight leading Turkish construction contractors that are operating within the international construction market. The specific objectives of this survey are to find out ...
Performance of the heuristic procedures for constrained projects with progress payments
Sepil, C; Ortac, N (Informa UK Limited, 1997-11-01)
All large scale resource constrained projects involve cash flows occurring during their life cycle. Several recent studies consider the problem of scheduling projects to maximise the net present value (NPV) of these cash flows. Their basic common assumption is that cash flows are mainly associated with specific events and they occur at event realisation times. An alternative assumption, which can be more realistic, is that cash inflows occur periodically, for example every month; as progress payments. This ...
