Laminated composites with ceramic front layers and metallic or composite backing layers have gained attractiveness as 11,lightweight armours, as they exhibit the same ballistic performance with lower area] densities as compared to steels. Drop-weight testing (DWT) has potential for evaluating the low velocity impact behaviour or materials. This testing gives significant ideas and information about failure mechanisms and behaviour of materials under low velocity impact. In this study, DWT of alumina/aluminum laminated composites was done in order to investigate the effects of lamination type, density with respect to area and mechanical property of backing material on the low velocity ballistic performance of these composites. The experimental results showed that the laminated composite with ceramic front layer and aged-aluminum alloy as backing layer was the most effective among different investigated specimens against low velocity impact loads.

Investigation on the ballistic behavior of Al(2)O(3)/Al2O24 laminated composites
Ubeyli, Mustafa; Yıldırım, Raif Orhan; Ögel, Bilgehan (2008-01-21)
Laminated composites have great potential in producing lightweight armors. This study presents the experimental study of the low velocity ballistic behavior of Al(2)O(3)/Al2O24 (alumina/aluminum) laminated composites against 7.62 x 51 mm armor piercing (AP) projectiles. The effects of mechanical properties of backing material and laminating type as well as the adhesive type on the ballistic performance of the composite armor were investigated. Furthermore, an inspection of the fracture surfaces was carried ...
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF REPAIRED CARBON FIBER REINFORCED POLYMER COMPOSITES
Sonat, Emine Evren; Özerinç, Sezer; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2021-12-10)
Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites are increasingly used in the aerospace industry due to their high specific strength compared to conventional metallic materials. However, a significant shortcoming of these composites is their increased susceptibility to damage. Structural repair is a common method to restore the load-carrying capacity of a damaged part when the damage size exceeds the pre-defined tolerances. Scarf and stepped bonded repair methods are the primary choice for cases that requi...
Experimental Investigation of Strength of Curved Beam by Thin Ply Non-Crimp Fabric Laminates
Arca, M. A.; PAPİLA, MELİH; Çöker, Demirkan (2016-06-09)
Resistance against delamination failure and through the thickness tensile properties of curved carbon fiber reinforced plastics composites are investigated experimentally by conducting the curved beam strength tests. Effect of novel material thin ply non crimp fabric (NCF) architecture on delamination resistance of carbon fiber reinforced composites are investigated and compare with that of standard UD layups. In order to determine through the thickness tensile properties of curved carbon fiber composites, ...
Experimental determination of tool wear in routing and trimming of CFRP composites
Peker, Zühal; Akkök, Metin; Kılıç, S. Engin; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2015)
In order to fulfill growing demand for lighter aircraft, Carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) have been developed, which differ from metals with regards to their machinability characteristics. The main problem in machining process is the damage caused by delamination of CFRP materials which need to be both cut and shorn of fibers at the same time, since they are remarkably abrasive in nature. This research aims at accessing the most appropriate cutting condition with less tool wear in routing and trimmin...
Experimental Observations of Dynamic Delamination in Curved [0] and [0/90] Composite Laminates
Uyar, I.; Arca, M.A.; Gozluklu, B.; Çöker, Demirkan (2015-01-01)
Curved composite parts are increasingly replacing metal ribs and box structures in recent civil aerospace structures and wind turbine blades. Delamination of L-shaped composite laminates occurs by interlaminar opening stresses in addition to the interlaminar shear stresses at the curved region. An experimental setup is designed to investigate dynamic delamination in L-shaped composite brackets under quasi static shear loading. The materials are unidirectional [0]17and cross-ply [0/90]17 epoxy/graphite compo...
