Risky Play in Early Childhood Education: A Risk Worth Taking

2018-12-01
This paper aimed to present a literature review, examine relevant studies and present their common aims and findings. Based on this review, the study also intended to discuss and evaluate the current status of risky play in Turkish early childhood education. The literature was chosen through online sources, including several books, reports and many articles in the journals. A comprehensive research was conducted through data bases including ERIC, SCOPUS, ULAKBIM and Complementary Index using the key words such as; risk, risk taking, risky play, risk perception. Sources were evaluated for eligibility based on predetermined categories such as the definition and categories of risky play, the value of risky play, and the effect of teacher interactions and school structure on risky play. The relevant studies were summarized using a template based on the predetermined categories and additional categories that emerged in the review process. In reviewed studies, it was frequently stated that over protective parenting style and a rise in risk anxiety related to children’s safety are common characteristics in modern society during the 19th and the 20th century. At that point, the key role of early childhood institutions in provision of risky play for children comes into question. However, there should be some regulations in schools in order to balance risk and safety. For instance, the staff–child ratio should be decreased to ensure active and appropriate supervision. Similarly, outdoor playgrounds should be improved to eliminate possibilities for negative risk-taking behaviors because of insufficient challenges or boredom. More natural elements could be included to increase the opportunities for risky play or the teacher might carry out outdoor play sessions in natural surroundings such as forests or woodland.

Research on teaching practicum - a systematic review
Lawson, Tony; ÇAKMAK, MELEK; Gündüz, Müge; Busher, Hugh (2015-07-03)
The aim of the present study is to conduct a systematic review research which focuses on research studies into the school practicum. In order to identify the main issues and also to provide a contemporary picture of practicum, 114 studies published on the topic are reviewed and analysed in terms of: (i) aims, (ii) main participants, (iii) methodology used and (iv) the main outcomes emerging. Many of the reviewed studies take pre-service teachers as their main participants. The review also shows that many pr...
Exploring the Effects of Science Writing Heuristic Approach on 8th Grade Students Metacognition
Tucel, Tuğçe; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Öztekin, Ceren (2015-09-04)
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of Science Writing Heuristic (SWH) approach on middle school students' metacognition. For this purpose, a quasi-experimental research design, the non-equivalent control group post-test only design was used with the aim to compare the experimental and the comparison groups mean difference with respect to dependent variables. 60 eight grade students with a mean age of 14 years in two classes selected from one public school in an urban area. One class was ra...
Application of Project-Based Learning in a Theoretical Course: Process, Difficulties and Recommendations
CODUR, K. Burak; Karatas, Sercin; Doğru, Ali Hikmet (2012-01-01)
This paper presents a case study about the application of a project-based learning approach. In this case study, software development projects are performed by the students, using historical software development methods in order to demonstrate evolution of the subject. The presented case study differs from others reported in the literature in its utilization of historical methods for project execution. Getting feedback and reaction of students and assessing the success of the project-based learning implemen...
Machine Learning and Rule-based Approaches to Assertion Classification
Uzuner, Oezlem; Zhang, Xiaoran; Sibanda, Tawanda (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2009-01-01)
Objectives: The authors study two approaches to assertion classification. One of these approaches, Extended NegEx (ENegEx), extends the rule-based NegEx algorithm to cover alter-association assertions; the other, Statistical Assertion Classifier (StAC), presents a machine learning solution to assertion classification.
Hidden Concepts in the History and Philosophy of Origins-of-Life Studies: a Workshop Report
Mariscal, Carlos; et. al. (2019-09-01)
In this review, we describe some of the central philosophical issues facing origins-of-life research and provide a targeted history of the developments that have led to the multidisciplinary field of origins-of-life studies. We outline these issues and developments to guide researchers and students from all fields. With respect to philosophy, we provide brief summaries of debates with respect to (1) definitions (or theories) of life, what life is and how research should be conducted in the absence of an acc...
