This study aims to create high quality nickel oxide (NiO) thin films at low temperatures, which is a prerequisite for coatings on temperature sensitive substrates. NiO chunks were evaporated by electron beam source, and NiO thin films were deposited at a thickness value around 250 nm. Depositions were performed at different experimental conditions: oxygen flow rate, deposition temperature, deposition rate, and plasma assistance. Deposited films were analyzed with regard to the structural, optical, and electrical aspects. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results reveal that films are grown in cubic nickel oxide phase with preferred orientation of (111) plane. Nonstoichiometry of NiO films increases with increasing oxygen flow rate and plasma assistance leads to stoichiometric NiO films. Needle, spherical, and cuboidal particle formation were seen in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. Grain size, lattice parameter, and grain morphology were used to explain the variations in optical and electrical properties. It was seen that the mobility of the films increases with oxygen flow rate because of enhanced grain size revealed by XRD calculations and SEM images. Plasma assistance dramatically lowers the resistivity to 150 Omega cm compared to nonassisted films possessing resistivities on the order of megaohm centimeter values. Although plasma assistance results in low mobility [0.2 cm(2)/(Vs)], enhanced sheet carrier concentration (1.1 x 10 13 cm(-1)) was found to be the major factor leading to high conductivity. This situation is related to denser films with higher crystallinity, which was detected from the refractive index spectrum and confirmed by SEM analysis. Optical absorption studies at 400-600 nm wavelengths revealed that absorption can be minimized by deposition under high oxygen flow rate, high deposition temperature, and low deposition rate conditions. Optical band gaps can be tuned by varying the oxygen flow rate, deposition temperature, and deposition rate. It was seen that the Fermi level and valence band minima of the films highly depend on the oxygen flow rate and can be engineered by manipulating the flow rate of oxygen and deposition conditions. Moisture absorption of composites with interfacial storage
Güloğlu, Görkem Eğemen; Hamidi, Youssef K.; Altan, M. Cengiz (2020-07-01)
© 2020 Elsevier LtdThermosetting polymer composites are often exposed to wet and humid environments, leading to a considerable reduction in their thermo-mechanical properties. Hence, accurate description of the moisture absorption dynamics, including anomalous effects such as molecular bonding and interfacial storage of moisture, is particularly important. In this study, the hindered diffusion model is extended to include the moisture storage at the interface of impermeable fibers or inclusions within the c...
Synergistic fire retardancy of colemanite, a natural hydrated calcium borate, in high-impact polystyrene containing brominated epoxy and antimony oxide
Kaynak, Cevdet (2011-05-01)
This study explores for the first time the synergistic fire retardant action of natural hydrated calcium borate, namely the mineral colemanite, which partially replaces antimony oxide in brominated flame retardant high-impact polystyrene compounds. Various antimony oxide to hydrated calcium borate ratios were employed keeping the brominated flame retardant additive at a constant loading level. With partial colemanite substitution for antimony oxide, lower heat release rate, total heat evolved and fire growt...
Zinc Oxide Nanowire Photodetectors with Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Thin-Film Electrodes
Ates, Elif Selen; Kucukyildiz, Seyda; Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah (2012-10-01)
In this study, transparent and flexible zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire ultraviolet (UV) photodetectors prepared via a solution-based method in which single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) thin films were used as transparent electrodes are reported. The photoresponse current was found to be in proportion with the ZnO nanowire density, and the nanowire density could be tuned to increase the photocurrent by a factor of 300. The decay time for the fabricated photodetectors was found to be as low as 16 s. This study su...
Nonlinear optical properties of low temperature annealed silicon-rich oxide and silicon-rich nitride materials for silicon photonics
Minissale, S.; Yerci, Selçuk; Dal Negro, L. (2012-01-09)
We investigate the nonlinear optical properties of Si-rich silicon oxide (SRO) and Si-rich silicon nitride (SRN) samples as a function of silicon content, annealing temperature, and excitation wavelength. Using the Z-scan technique, we measure the non-linear refractive index n(2) and the nonlinear absorption coefficient beta for a large number of samples fabricated by reactive co-sputtering. Moreover, we characterize the nonlinear optical parameters of SRN in the broad spectral region 1100-1500 nm and show ...

A study was carried out to tailor the properties of ultrasonic spray pyrolysis deposited Al-doped ZnO (AZO) thin films suitable for transparent heater applications. For this purpose, the influences of solvent/precursor type and molarity, Al-doping concentration, nozzle to substrate distance, solution flow rate, carrier gas flow, substrate temperature, and post-deposition annealing on the microstructure, electrical, optical properties, and heating/ deicing behaviors of the films were investigated. The optimi...
