Changes in abundance and biomass of Synechococcus were studied during five cruises carried out between November 2004 and September 2005 in the Iskenderun Bay, northeastern Mediterranean. In addition, spatial and temporal variations in physico-chemical factors and Chl a were measured. Abundance ranged from 0.2 x 10(4) to 23.09 x 10(4) cells ml(-1), whereas the biomass ranged from 0.19 (1) to 23.01 mu gC l(-1) in the bay. Synechococcus was found most numerous during September 2005 in the shallower part of the bay while the population was observed least during November 2004 and January 2005. The contribution of < 3 mu m size fraction to total Chl a ranged between 48%, and 74%, being low during the cold period and higher during the warm period. The observed spatial and temporal fluctuations in abundance seemed to be closely related to environmental conditions in the area. Small-sized phytoplankton dominated the bulk of biomass, at least for the summer period.

Concentration and chemical composition of PM2.5 and PM10-2.5 in the Northeastern Mediterranean
Kubilay, Nilguen; Koçak, Mustafa; Mihalopoulos, Nikos (2006-09-01)
Two stage aerosol samples (PM10-2.5 and PM2.5) were collected at a rural site (Erdemli) located on the coast of the Northeastern Mediterranean, between April 2001 and April 2002. A total of 581 aerosol samples were analysed for trace elements (Fe, Ti, Mn, Ca, V, Ni, Zn, Cr) and water soluble ions (Na+, NH4+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Cl-, Br-, NO3-, SO42-, C2O42- and MS-). The annual mean PM10 and PM2.5 levels were 36.4 +/- 27.8 mu g m(-3) and 9.7 +/- 5.9, respectively. The highest levels of PM10 were observed during...
SPECIES COMPOSITION, ABUNDANCE AND BIOMASS OF COPEPODA IN PLANKTON OF THE NORTHERN LEVANTINE BASIN (EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN)
Uysal, Zahit (2012-07-01)
Changes in species composition, abundance and biomass of copepods were monitored weekly over the year 1998 in shelf waters of the northern Levantine Basin. A total of 192 copepod species belonging to 61 genera were identified during the course of this study. Thirty-six species are reported for the first time from the region, including three new species. Copepod abundance ranged from 215 individuals m(-3) in early March to 2220 individuals m(-3) in late March, whereas the biomass ranged from 4 mg m(-3) in mi...
Annual cycle of zooplankton abundance and species composition in Izmit Bay (the northeastern Marmara Sea)
Isinibilir, Melek; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; TARKAN, AHMET NURİ; Yılmaz, İsmail (2008-07-30)
The monthly abundance, biomass and taxonomic composition of zooplankton of Izmit Bay (the northeastern Marmara Sea) were studied from October 2001 to September 2002. Most species within the zooplankton community displayed a clear pattern of succession throughout the year. Generally copepods and cladocerans were the most abundant groups, while the contribution of meroplankton increased at inner-most stations and dominated the zooplankton. Both species number (S) and diversity (if) were positively influenced ...
The annual cycle of Synechococcus (cyanobacteria) in the northern Levantine Basin shelf waters (Eastern Mediterranean)
Uysal, Zahit (2006-09-01)
Abundance of picoplanktonic chroococcoid marine cyanobacteria Synechococcus was monitored weekly over the year 1998 in shallow coastal waters of the northern Levantine Basin. The ambient physical, chemical and biological variables (temperature, salinity, Secchi disk depth, total suspended sediment, nitrate, phosphate, Chl a and phytoplankton) were also measured. Synechococcus was found to be more abundant during summer and early autumn and less during winter and early spring. At the surface and 15 m depth, ...
Weekly Variations in Phytoplankton Structure of a Harbour in Mersin Bay north eastern Mediterranean
Eker Develi, Elif; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2000-01-01)
Weekly variations in the phytoplankton composition of a harbour in Mersin Bay were studied with two methods: filtration for the assessment of >55 μm phytoplankton from July 1995 to June 1997; and sedimentation for the assessment of all phytoplankton (both>55 μm and <55 μm) between 15 February and 25 May in 1996. With both sampling methods, a total of 175 phytoplankton species were identified. In the filtered samples, the total diatom abundance was much higher than that of dinoflagellates. The highest diatom...
