Qualitative composition and abundance of both ichdryoplankton and small forms of zooplankton were evaluated by field studies in the northern (the Crimea near Sevastopol) and Southern (Sinop region and TEEZ) Black Sea during the summers 2000 and 2001. A tendency of increasing the species richness, abundance of fish eggs and larvae as well as zooplankton (which is the food for fish larvae) was observed over a period of Mnemiopsis leidyi and Beroe ovata co-existence. The eggs and larvae of the Mediterranean migrants-bonito and bluefish appeared again in the coastal waters near Sevastopol, which testified to favourable conditions for the spawning and nutrition of these fish species and their larvae. Aborigen copepod Oithona nana was found in the Crimean coastal waters although earlier in the 1990s it had completely vanished. Although rare in the 1990s copepods Centropages ponticus and Paracalanus parvus appeared in inshore waters as well as Pontellids species. Observed increases in species number and abundance of both ichdryoplankton and small zooplankton (: 500 pin), which promoted survival and development of fish larvae, were attributed to reduced predatory impact of Mnemiopsis on prey zooplankton after the arrival of Beroe in the late 1990s. However, the influence of Mnemiopsis continued to be significant during the short period of its peak occurrence in late summer. When this period coincided with the appearance of fish larvae, a negative impact on their survival could be predicted due to a low concentration of food items for larvae feeding.

Decreased levels of the invasive ctenophore Mnemiopsis in the Marmara Sea in 2001
İŞİNİBİLİR OKYAR, Melek; Tarkan, AN; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2004-01-01)
Mnemiopsis leidyi, an endemic ctenophore of the western Atlantic, was first reported in the Marmara Sea in summer 1992, at an average abundance of 27 ind. m(-3). We investigated its abundance and distribution together with that of the mesozooplankton (most species are prey organisms of M. leidyi) at eight stations during August 2001, in order to evaluate recent population developments with regard to the impact of its predator, Beroe cf ovata. The abundance of M. leidyi was found to be quite low (range 0.5-8...

Seasonality of zooplankton in the Southern Black Sea and genetics of Calanus Euxinus (Copepoda)
Ünal, Ebru; Kıdeyş, Ahmet; Graduate School of Marine Sciences (2002)
Seasonality and composition of zooplankton was comparatively studied at two stations (inshore and offshore) off Sinop, in southern Black Sea in 1999. Intra-specific genetic differentiation of the copepod Calanus euxinus dwelling in different layers along the water column was also investigated in samples obtained from different regions of the southern Black Sea in September 2000. A total of 64 zooplankton species were identified in the Sinop region in 1999, most of which being meroplankton. Out of these, 17 ...
Wet deposition of major ions and trace elements in the eastern Mediterranean basin
Al-Momani, IF; Aygun, S; Tuncel, Süleyman Gürdal (1998-04-20)
Elemental and ionic composition of the eastern Mediterranean precipitation was determined on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey between January 1992 and January 1994. Measured concentrations were comparable with the concentrations reported from other rural stations. Concentrations of elements and ions show strong short-term and well-defined long-term variations. Short-term variations are due to transport from different source areas whereas longterm (seasonal) variations are governed by the seasonal changes i...
Effect of temperature on clearance rate daily ration and digestiontime of Mnemiopsis leidyi from the southern Caspian Sea
M,, Rowshantabari; Finenko, Ga; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; Kiabi, B. (University of Guilan, 2012-06-01)
The effect of temperature on the main feeding parameters of Mnemiopsis leidyi from the southern Caspian Sea was studied in 2002. The clearance rates and daily rations were estimated from laboratory experiments in a wide range of temperatures from 12 to 27 ?C for M. leidyi of 12?17 mm in length. Clearance rate values changed from 52.5 to 107.3 ml ind-1 h-1. The coefficient Q10 in temperature 12 - 20 ?C was higher than that in 20 - 27 ?C (3.81 and 1.91, respectively). The specific daily ration changed from 1....
