In this paper, we present the preliminary data on the age of the radiolarian cherts deposited on top of basalts belonging to the Eastern Ankara Melange (part of the Izmir-Ankara Melange). Petrological studies on the basalts were carried out in order to constrain the tectonic setting of the studied basalt-chert sequences. Nine sections were sampled East and Northeast of Ankara and twenty seven samples were collected for biostratigraphic and geochemical analyses.

The Jurassic-Early Cretaceous basalt-chert association in the ophiolites of the Ankara Melange, east of Ankara, Turkey: age and geochemistry

This study is focused on slide blocks including oceanic lavas associated with pelagic sediments within the eastern part of the Ankara Melange. A detailed petrological characterization of the volcanic rocks and a detailed biochronological investigation of the associated radiolarian cherts in eight sections (east of Ankara) was carried out. The volcanic rocks are largely represented by basalts and minor ferrobasalts and trachytes. They show different geochemical affinities and overlapping ages including: (a) ...
Geological and Geochemical Evolution of the Quaternary Suphan Stratovolcano, Eastern Anatolia, Turkey: Evidence for the Lithosphere-Asthenosphere Interaction in Post-Collisional Volcanism
Özdemir, Yavuz; Güleç, Nilgün Türkan (Oxford University Press (OUP), 2014-01-01)
The Suphan stratovolcano is one of the major Quaternary eruption centers of post-collisional volcanism in eastern Anatolia, located in the zone of convergence between the Arabian and the Anatolian plates. We document the geological and geochemical evolution of Suphan in terms of volcanostratigraphy, geochronology (Ar-40-Ar-39), isotope composition (Sr, Nd, Pb) and bulk-rock geochemistry. Our new Ar-40-Ar-39 data, along with previously published K/Ar ages, indicate an age of 0 center dot 76-0 center dot 06 M...
Origin and interactions of fluids circulating over the Amik Basin (Hatay, Turkey) and relationships with the hydrologic, geologic and tectonic settings

We investigated the geochemical features of the fluids circulating over the Amik Basin (SE Turkey-Syria border), which is crossed by the Northern extension of the DSF (Dead Sea Fault) and represents the boundary area of three tectonic plates (Anatolian, Arabian and African plates). We collected 34 water samples (thermal and cold from natural springs and boreholes) as well as 8 gas samples (bubbling and gas seepage) besides the gases dissolved in the sampled waters. The results show that the dissolved gas ph...
Geochemistry, tectono-magmatic discrimination and radiolarian ages of basic extrusives within the Izmir-Ankara Suture Belt (NW Turkey): Time constraints for the neotethyan evolution
Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Tekin, U. Kagan (2006-06-01)
The Dagkuplu Melange in the Central Sakarya Valley represents the northernmost outcrops of the Izmir-Ankara Suture Belt in northwest Anatolia. In addition to blocks and slivers of serpentinite, gabbro, blueschist, neritic and pelagic limestones, it includes blocks of basic volcanic rocks associated with radiolarian cherts, pelagic carbonates and mudstones.
Strength of various sands in triaxial and cyclic direct shear tests
ÇABALAR, ALİ FIRAT; Dulundu, Kemal; Tuncay, Kağan (Elsevier BV, 2013-04-01)
This paper presents the result of an extensive series of experimental investigation carried out in triaxial and cyclic direct shear tests on sands having various properties, which were obtained from different locations in Turkey and in Northern Cyprus. In order to investigate the link between strength and physical properties (i.e., shape) of the sand particles, three series of triaxial tests (Consolidated-Drained, CD; Consolidated-Undrained, CU; and Unconsolidated-Undrained, UU) for each were performed unde...
