The posidoniform bivalve species Posidonia becheri Bronn, 1828, has been identified for the first time in the Lower Carboniferous (Tournaisian) sandy limestone-dark grey shale deposits of Hakkari Province, south-eastern Turkey. Palaeogeographically, this area was located at the northern tip of the Gondwanan Arabian Palaeozoic platform at the southern Palaeotethyan margin during the Carboniferous. The closest localities to this new occurrence are the Lower Carboniferous of northern England, Germany (Kulm Basin), Poland (Walbrzych Basin), Northwest Belgium, Spain (Cantabrian Mountains), Portugal, and Northwest Turkey (Zonguldak Basin). All these locations are considered parts of the Avalonian or Perigondwanan terranes, and were located NW of the Palaeotethys. Hence, our new finding from the SE Palaeotethyan margin, together with the data from Morocco, indicates that this posidoniid bivalve had probably been transported by oceanic currents in its larval stage to lower palaeolatitudes (about 50 degrees S) within the Palaeotethyan Ocean during the Early Carboniferous, or alternatively, the northern Arabian platform margin was located in lower latitudes than previously suggested. Fusulinoidean faunas from the Upper Carboniferous and Lower Permian platform limestone in the Hadim area, Central Taurides, Turkey
Kobayashi, Fumio; Altıner, Demir (2008-07-01)
Sixty-one species assignable to 31 genera of Late Carboniferous and Early Permian fusulinoideans were distinguished from the Hadim area, central Taurides, Turkey. They are biostratigraphically divided into eleven zones in ascending order: Protriticites variabilis, Montiparus urnbonoplicatus and Schwageriniformis schwageriniformis zones in the Kasimovian; the figulites A formosus, Daixina asiatica and Rugosofusulina sp. A zones in the Gzhelian; Paraschwagerina sp. and Dutkevichia complicata zones in the Asse...
Geological, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of Mississippian K-bentonites from southern Turkey: A correlation with coeval tephras from Gondwana-derived terranes
Bozkaya, Ömer; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Okuyucu, Cengiz (2021-09-01)
Five thin (5–15 cm) and yellowish green tephra (K-bentonite) layers are exposed along two sections in the south of Akşehir (Konya, southern Turkey) within the Early Carboniferous (Mississippian) red dolomite-dolomitic limestone succession of the Sultandağ Unit in the central Tauride Belt. K-bentonites exhibit typical porphyritic texture with euhedral plagioclase phenocrysts replaced by fine-grained white K-micas and sparry dolomite crystals. The intensively sericitized volcanic matrix has vitrophyric textur...
Geological features and geochemical characteristics of Late Devonian-Early Carboniferous K-bentonites from northwestern Turkey
Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; OKUYUCU, CENGİZ; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer (2016-09-01)
Newly discovered K-bentonite beds, interstratified with limestones/dolomitic limestones of the Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous Yilanli Formation, are exposed in the northwestern Black Sea region of Turkey, around Zonguldak and Bartin. K-bentonite samples collected from four different locations: the Gavurpinari and Yilanli Burnu quarries from the Bartin area, the Cimsir Cukurlari quarry from the Sapca area, and the Gudullu and Gokgol highway tunnel section near Zonguldak city were investigated using optic...
Terebella lapilloides Munster, 1833 from the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Inalti carbonates, northern Turkey: its taxonomic position and paleoenvironmental-paleoecological significance
Kaya, Mustafa Yucel; Altıner, Demir (2014-01-01)
The agglutinating annelid Terebella lapilloides Munster, 1833 is commonly encountered in reefal deposits from the Late Jurassic. This annelid is described and documented for the first time from the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous carbonates of the Inalti Formation in the Central Pontides, Turkey. The whole Inalti formation, 395 m in thickness, was studied near Burnuk village and 105 samples were collected along the section. The investigated thin sections reveal the shallow water and the reefal/fore-reefal c...
Divaricate patterns in Cambro-Ordovician obolid brachiopods from Gondwana
Mergl, M.; Hosgor, I; Yılmaz, İsmail Ömer; Zamora, S.; Colmenar, J. (Informa UK Limited, 2018-01-01)
A new brachiopod species, Westonia mardini, from the Furongian of Turkey and a new occurrence of Westonia urbiona from the Cambrian Series 3 of Iberian Peninsula are reported. These new finds of 'westoniids' collected in Gondwana allow the discussion of the functional morphology of their terrace ridges. This structure enabled an effective and rapid reburrowing and allowed the occupation of the shallow marine unstable sands and silts in the shoreface environments. This burrowing mechanism, with their pedicle...
