Recent evidence indicates that boron and borates may have anticarcinogenic properties. In this study, we have investigated the incidence of adverse cytological findings in cervical smears and the micronucleus (MN) frequency in women living in boron-rich and boron-poor regions. Cervical smears were prepared from 1059 women with low socioeconomic status; 472 of the women lived in relatively boron-rich rural areas, while 587 lived in relatively boron-poor regions. The average and standard deviation values for the age of the women screened with the cervical Pap smear test were 41.55 +/- 8.38. The mean dietary intake of boron was 8.41 mg/day for women from the boron-rich regions, and 1.26 mg/day for women living in the boron-poor regions (P < 0.0001). Women from the boron-rich regions had no cytopathological indications of cervical cancer, while there were cytopathological findings for 15 women from the boron-poor areas (chi(2) = - 10.473, P < 0.05). Sixty women, 30 from each region, were chosen for evaluating MN frequencies in exfoliated buccal cells. MN frequencies for women from the boron-rich and boron-poor regions were not significantly different (t = -0.294, P > 0.05). Also, there were no significant correlations between age and MN frequency for women from both the boron-rich (r = 0.133, P = 0.48, P > 0.05) and boron-poor (r = -0.033, P = 0.861, P > 0.05) regions. The results suggest that ingestion of boron in the drinking water decreases the incidence of cervical cancer-related histopathological findings. There was no correlation between the pathological findings from the cervical smears and buccal cell MN frequency suggesting that the two study populations were exposed equally to gentotoxic agents. Nonetheless, cervical cancer-related histopathological findings should be validated by other researchers. (c) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Effect of airborne particle on SO2-calcite reaction
Boke, H; Göktürk, Emine Hale; Caner-Saltik, EN; Demirci, S (1999-02-01)
In modern urban atmosphere, sulphur dioxide (SO2) attacks calcite (CaCO3) in calcareous stone-producing gypsum (CaSO4 . 2H(2)O) which forms crust at rain sheltered surfaces and accelerates erosion at areas exposed to rain. The airborne particles collected on stone surfaces have always been considered to enhance the gypsum crust formation and thus it is believed that they should be removed from the surface to decrease the effects of SO2. In this study, our aim was to investigate this event by carrying out a ...
EFFECT OF PHENOL AND RESORCINOL ON LEACHING OF ILMENITE WITH HCL-CH3OH AND HCL-C2H5OH SOLUTIONS
GIRGIN, I; Türker, Burhan Lemi; GOODALL, D (Elsevier BV, 1991-07-01)
The effects of phenols on hydrochloric acid leaching of metal oxides is investigated theoretically. A mathematical model is developed for the early stages of leaching assuming that steady state conditions and Fick's first law are valid for the formation and diffusion of metal cations through the Helmholtz-Stern interface. It is found theoretically that the leaching rate is exponentially proportional to acid and phenol concentrations and any metal-phenol complex which can be decomposed by chloride ions shoul...
Effect of sodium silicate on flocculation of hematite with starch in the presence of calcium
Arol, Ali İhsan (2003-01-01)
Sodium silicate is used as a dispersant in the selective flocculation of iron ores with starch as the polymeric floccullant. The mechanism of its dispersive effect on quartz has been reported to be related to its ability to remove coagulants, such as calcium and magnesium ions, from the process water. The interaction between iron oxides and calcium and sodium silicate, which has not appeared in literature, is also an important factor that would contribute to the success of the selective flocculation process...
Effect of Tomato Pulp Addition on the Functional Properties of Extrudates
Tonyalı, Bade; Cagla, Caltinoglu; Şensoy, İlkay (null; 2013-05-20)
Effect of addition of tomato pulp on the physical parameters and the effect of extrusion on functional properties of the extrudates were investigated. Corn grits with and without tomato pulp at 30% moisture were extruded. Sectional expansion index, color and sensory analysis were conducted. Tomato pulp addition caused sligt increase in the expansion index at two shear rate and caused increase in the redness and some decrease in yellowness. Sensory analysis indicated no significant difference between the pul...
Effects of bromide ion and natural organic matter fractions on the formation and speciation of chlorination by-products
Ates, Nuray; Yetiş, Ülkü; Kitis, Mehmet (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2007-10-01)
The impacts of bromide concentration and natural organic matter (NOM) characteristics on the formation and speciation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) in chlorinated NOM fractions were investigated. A total of 20 bulk water NOM fractions with a wide range of specific ultraviolet (UV) absorbance (SUVA(254)) values were obtained from a source water employing XAD-8 or XAD-4 resin adsorption in completely mixed batch reactors. SUVA was not a good predictor of DBP [trihalomethanes (THMs), haloacetic acids (HAA...
