The potential of different forms of chitosan to adsorb iron(III) ion from a Jectofer [an iron(III)-sorbitol-citric acid complex] solution was investigated. The working solution was chosen as Jectofer, to mimic the composition of excess iron(III) as may be found in biological systems. The equilibrium studies showed that chitosan powder has the highest sorption capacity for the iron(III) ion when compared to chitosan flakes and microspheres. The amount of iron(III) adsorbed onto chitosan was found to increase with the contact time to reach equilibrium within 3 h at 37degreesC. A higher initial concentration of a Jectofer solution resulted in a higher amount of iron(III) adsorbed. Higher pH values, in the range 2-7, also resulted in an increase in iron(III) uptake from the solution. The data of adsorption from the Jectofer solution were found to correlate well with the Freundlich isotherm equation. In vitro adsorption experiments showed that chitosan is capable of adsorbing excess iron, measured in terms of the ferritin level, in human blood. (C) 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Electrochromic properties of 'Trimeric' thiophene-pyrrole-thiophene derivative grown from electrodeposited 6-(2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)hexan-1-amine and its copolymer
Tarkuc, Simge; Ak, Metin; Onurhan, Erdal; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Informa UK Limited, 2008-01-01)
A centrosymmetric polymer precursor, namely 6-(2,5-di(thiophen-2-yl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)hexan-1-amine (TPHA), was synthesized via a Knorr-Paal reaction using 1,4-di(2-thienyl)-1,4-butanedione and hexane-1,6-diamine. The resultant monomer was characterized by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (H-1-NMR). Electroactivity of TPHA was investigated via cyclic voltammetry. The electronic structure and the nature of electrochromism in P(TPHA) and its copolymer with EDOT, (P(TPHA-co-EDOT)), were examined via spectroelectrochem...
Electrochemical synthesis of crowned conducting polymers : nature of radical cations in polymerization and mechanism of conductivity
Cihaner, Atilla; Önal, Ahmet Muhtar; Department of Chemistry (2004)
Poly(dibenzo-18-crown-6) (Poly(DB18C6)) was synthesized by electrochemical oxidation of dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) using a mixture of acetonitrile and dichloromethane as solvent and tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBABF4) or tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate (TBAPF6) as supporting electrolyte. The anodic polymerization of DB18C6 was investigated using in-situ ESR and in-situ UV-VIS spectroscopic techniques. Spectroelectrochemical (SPEL) properties and thermal analysis of the resulting polymers h...
Electrochromic properties of copolymer of terephthalic acid bis-(thiophen-3-yl-methyl) thioester with pyrrole
Tuerkarslan, Oezlem; Toppare, Levent Kamil (Informa UK Limited, 2007-01-01)
Terephthalic acid bis-(thiophen-3-yl-methyl) thioester ( TTMT) was synthesized via the reaction of thiophen-3-yl methanethiol with terephthaloyl dichloride. This 3-functionalized thiophene monomer was polymerized in the presence of pyrrole (Py) upon constant potential application. Spectroelectrochemistry experiments reflected a pi to pi* transition with a band gap energy of 2.4 eV for the copolymer. A dual type electrochromic device (ECD) of P(TTMT-co-Py) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was con...
Poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid) stabilized cobalt(0) nanoparticles: A cost-effective and magnetically recoverable catalyst in hydrogen generation from the hydrolysis of hydrazine borane
Karahan, Senem; Özkar, Saim (2015-02-09)
Herein, we report the in situ generation, isolation and characterization of cobalt(0) nanoparticles, stabilized by poly(4-styrenesulfonic acid-co-maleic acid), PSSMA, and their catalytic activity in the hydrolysis of hydrazine borane (HB). Cobalt(0) nanoparticles having average particle size of 3.1 +/- 0.5 nm were prepared by in situ reduction of cobalt(II) chloride in aqueous solution of hydrazine borane in the presence of PSSMA, isolated magnetically from the catalytic reaction solution using a magnet, an...
Electrochemical polymerization and characterization of polyether-substituted aniline derivatives
Tirkeş, Süha; Oenal, Ahmet M. (Wiley, 2007-08-01)
New compounds consisting of aniline units linked by polyether bridges have been synthesized and their electrochemical polymerization was performed via constant potential electrolysis and cyclic voltammetry in an aqueous solution containing 3.0 moI L-1 H2SO4. Chemical polymerization was carried out using (NH4)(2)S2O8 as oxidizing agent. It was found that both methods gave the same polymer product without any cleavage of the polyether bridge between aniline rings. The polymers were characterized using the Fou...
