Objective: The growth of plants during recovery period after freezing stress is more important for winter cereals to survive frost. However, little research has been done on physio-biochemical changes in response to recovery or rewarming conditions in cereals. In this study, the changes in oxidative stress intensities and antioxidant enzyme activities were thus examined under cold acclimation (CA), short-term freezing stress (F) and rewarming (R) conditions in barley cultivars differing in cold tolerance in order to assess the changes in Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) scavenging system.

Changes in the chemical composition of an acidic soil treated with marble quarry and marble cutting wastes
TOZSİN, Gülşen; ÖZTAŞ, Taşkın; Arol, Ali İhsan; KALKAN, Ekrem (Elsevier BV, 2015-11-01)
Soil acidity greatly affects the availability of plant nutrients. The level of soil acidity can be adjusted by treating the soil with certain additives. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of marble quarry waste (MQW) and marble cutting waste (MCW) on the chemical composition and the acidity of a soil. Marble wastes at different rates were applied to an acid soil. Their effectiveness in neutralizing the soil pH was compared with that of agricultural lime. The changes in the chemical comp...
Antioxidative and physiological responses of two sunflower (Helianthus annuus) cultivars under PEG-mediated drought stress

Drought stress is one of the most important yield-reducing factors in crop production. Sunflower, an oilseed crop, is severely affected by abiotic stress. In this study, 2 sunflower cultivars (Musala and Aydin) were evaluated in terms of various biochemical and physiological responses under 2 different polyethylene glycol-mediated drought stress conditions. Stress-determining parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), and proline contents were determined. Both cultivars showed simil...
Drought-induced oxidative damage and antioxidant responses in peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) seedlings
Akcay, U. Celikkol; Ercan, O.; Kavas, M.; Yildiz, L.; Yılmaz, Çetin; Öktem, Hüseyin Avni; YÜCEL, MUSTAFA (2010-05-01)
Two cultivars of peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) which were designated as resistant (Florispan) and sensitive (Gazipasa) according to their growth retardation under drought stress conditions were compared for their oxidative damage and antioxidant responses. Sixteen days-old peanut seedlings were subjected to PEG-6000 solutions of two different osmotic potentials; -0.4 and -0.8 MPa, and various growth parameters, photosystem II activity, changes in malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and proline le...
Physiological, Biochemical, and Transcriptional Responses to Single and Combined Abiotic Stress in Stress-Tolerant and Stress-Sensitive Potato Genotypes

Potato production is often constrained by abiotic stresses such as drought and high temperatures which are often present in combination. In the present work, we aimed to identify key mechanisms and processes underlying single and combined abiotic stress tolerance by comparative analysis of tolerant and susceptible cultivars. Physiological data indicated that the cultivars Desiree and Unica were stress tolerant while Agria and Russett Burbank were stress susceptible. Abiotic stress caused a greater reduction...
Effect of different stresses on trehalose levels in Rhizopus oryzae
Uyar, Ebru Ozer; Hamamcı, Haluk; TÜRKEL, SEZAİ (2010-08-01)
Rhizopus oryzae accumulates and degrades trehalose in response to environmental stress conditions such as heat, osmotic stress, nitrogen starvation and pH. When heat stress was applied to R. oryzae, the trehalose content of the cells was increased from 0.9 to 4.8 mg/g dw and when the stress was relieved it decreased back to 1.1 mg/g dw. Under osmotic stress and nitrogen starvation, trehalose content was increased by 3.5 and 3 fold, respectively. The decrease in external pH increased trehalose level up to 2....
