In this work the changes in thermal degradation characteristics of polyamide 6 (PA6) in the presence of melamine (Me) or melamine cyanurate (MC) were investigated systematically via direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry. Though thermal stability of PA6 was not affected by the presence of flame retardants, the changes in the products and in their distributions were detected. The reaction of carbonyl groups of PA6 with amine groups of melamine was the main cause for the changes in the product distribution. In the presence of melamine cyanurate, new products due to the reaction of cyanic acid generated by the decomposition of cyanurate, with the amine groups of PA6 were detected. Significant increases in the evolution temperatures of melamine and melamine cyanurate in the presence of PA6 were attributed to intermolecular interactions, most probably by H-bonding, with PA6.

Investigation of polymerization of benzoxazines and thermal degradation characteristics of polybenzoxazines via direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry
Fam, Shahla Bagheri; Uyar, Tamer; Ishida, Hatsuo; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2012-10-01)
Polymerization of benzoxazines and thermal degradation mechanisms of polybenzoxazines were investigated using the direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry (DP-MS) technique. The benzoxazine structures were based on phenol and aniline and on bisphenol-A and methylamine or aniline. Polymerizations of the benzoxazines were carried out by curing them at elevated temperatures without addition of initiator or catalyst. DP-MS data showed the presence of chains generated by opposing polymerization reaction pathways indic...
Investigation of copolymers of thiophene-functionalized polystyrene with pyrrole by pyrolysis mass spectrometry
Papila, Ozge; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Hacaloğlu, Jale (2006-06-01)
The thermal and structural characterization of electrochemically synthesized thiophene-functionalized polystyrene and pyrrole (PS/PPy) and their copolymers were investigated by direct pyrolysis mass spectrometry. The pyrolysis data confirmed the growth of polypyrrole onto the pendant thiophene moiety of polystyrene. It is determined that the electrolytic film has different properties from the mechanical mixture and the related homopolymers.
The characterization of polyaniline and polypyrrole composites by pyrolysis mass spectrometry
Hacaloğlu, Jale; Kücukyavuz, Zühal (2009-09-05)
hi this work, direct insertion probe pyrolysis mass spectrometry technique was applied to investigate the thermal and structural characteristics of electrochemically prepared polyaniline (PANI), polypyrrole (PPy), and their composites/copolymers synthesized either by electrochemical polymerization of pyrrole on PANI-coated electrode (PANI/PPy) or by coating PANI on PPy (PPy/PANI) in H(2)SO(4) solutions. It has been determined that the polymer first coated on the electrode degraded to a certain extent during...
A pyrolysis mass spectrometry study of polythiophene-polyamide composites
Vatansever, F.; Akbulut, Ural; Toppare, Levent Kamil; Hacaloğlu, Jale (1996-01-01)
The thermal behavior of composites of polythiophene and polyamide prepared by mechanical blending and electrochemical synthesis of polythiophene onto an electrode coated with polyamide have been studied thoroughly by the pyrolysis approach under both direct and indirect pyrolysis mass spectrometric analysis conditions. It is determined that the electrolytic film has different properties from the mechanical mixture and the related homopolymers.
Characterization of polyaniline via pyrolysis mass spectrometry
Hacaloğlu, Jale; Kücükyavuz, Zühal (2008-04-05)
In this work, direct insertion probe pyrolysis mass spectrometry technique was applied to investigate the thermal and the structural characteristics of electrochemically prepared HCl and HNO3-doped polyaniline (PANI) films. It has been determined that the thermal degradation of both samples showed three main thermal degradation stages. The first stage around 50-60 degrees C was associated with evolution of solvent and low-molecular-weight species adsorbed on the polymer, the second stage just above 150 degr...
