Some experimental results from the Fluid Mechanics Water Channel Facility at Birzeit University, Birzeit, Palestine, were used for computing discharge using separate channel methods in asymmetrical compound channels with varying floodplain widths and step heights. Three assumed interface planes (vertical, horizontal and diagonal) between the main channel and the floodplain subsections were considered. Then discharge values in the subsections and in the whole cross-section were evaluated. None of the separate channel methods used estimated the measured discharges accurately for the total range of the floodplain to main channel depths ratio (Y-f/Y-mc) investigated. The best discharge prediction methods with validity ranges of Y-f/Y-mc ratios are presented.

Roughness coefficient for flood plains with macro roughness elements
Aydın, İbrahim; Ustaomer, M. (2006-09-08)
Manning's roughness coefficient for flood plains with macro roughness elements is experimentally investigated in an 18 m long and 1 m wide laboratory channel. Velocity field was measured in the main and flood plain channels. Total discharge was obtained both from weir measurement and from integration of measured velocity field. Four different surface patterns including smooth and various arrangements of macro roughness elements were considered. Prismatic concrete volumes were placed as macro roughness eleme...
Experimental Investigation of the Anti Vortex Devices of Beyhan 1 Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant Water Intake Structure
Göğüş, Mustafa; Altan Sakarya, Ayşe Burcu; Köken, Mete (2016-06-17)
Hydraulic model tests of the intake structure of Beyhan 1 Dam having four units were carried out at Hydromechanics Laboratory of Middle East Technical University, Ankara In order to investigate the flow pattern, and formation, development and dissipation of vortices at the intake structure under different operation conditions of the units, and to determine the types of anti-vortex devices to avoid the air-entraining vortices, a model of 1/29.43 length scale was constructed. The model area covers an about 20...
Optimization of Vortex Promoter Parameters to Enhance Heat Transfer Rate in Electronic Equipment
Ayli, Ece; Bayer, Özgür (ASME International, 2020-04-01)
In this paper, optimization of the location and the geometry of a vortex promoter located above in a finned surface in a channel with eight heat sources is investigated for a Reynolds number of 12,500 < Re < 27,700. Heat transfer rates and the corresponding Nusselt number distributions are studied both experimentally and numerically using different vortex promoter geometries (square, circular, and triangular) in different locations to illustrate the effect of vortex promoter on the fluid flow. Optimization ...
Numerical Simulation of Reciprocating Flow Forced Convection in Two-Dimensional Channels
Sert, Cüneyt (ASME International, 2003-5-20)
Numerical simulations of laminar, forced convection heat transfer for reciprocating, two-dimensional channel flows are performed as a function of the penetration length, Womersley (α) and Prandtl (Pr) numbers. The numerical algorithm is based on a spectral element formulation, which enables high-order spatial resolution with exponential decay of discretization errors, and second-order time-accuracy. Uniform heat flux and constant temperature boundary conditions are imposed on certain regions of the ...
An experimental study on channel type shear connectors
Baran, Eray; Topkaya, Cem (2012-07-01)
This paper describes an experimental study on European channel shear connectors. While shear studs are widely used in steel-concrete composite elements, the channel connectors are also gaining popularity due to their certain advantages. The channel connectors do not require special equipment and standard welding procedures are adequate for attachment purposes. In addition, this type of connector offers higher amounts of shear resistance due to its high contact area with surrounding concrete. Although first ...
