Temporal and spatial changes in abundance, prosome length, oil sac volume, molting patterns and morphometric parameters were studied in Calanus euxinus from the Black and Marmara Seas. In the south-western part of the Black Sea and deep shelf zone near Sinop the abundance of C. euxinus was high during the whole studied period (2000-2005), with a maximum 23,400 ind m-2 in March 2004. In the Marmara Sea near the Prince Islands in the deep zone the mean annual abundance of C. euxinus was 47 times lower than in the deep zone of the Black Sea (during 2000-2007). However, this parameter reached a significant magnitude of 12,264 ind m-2 in spring in Izmit Bay. During the warm season, C. euxinus are rare in the Marmara Sea. The high temperature and salinity accelerate development in this species; therefore, preadults and adults possess reduced prosome length and oil sac volume. In the cold period in the Marmara Sea the size and lipid content in late copepodite stages increase, especially in Izmit Bay. Similar size of eggs, prosome length of early copepodite stages in the Black and Marmara Seas indicate that the C. euxinus population in the Marmara Sea originates from the individuals penetrating from the Black Sea through the Bosphorus.

Population dynamics and ecology of the invasive veined rapa whelk, Rapana venosa in the southern Black Sea
MUTLU, ERHAN; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; Şahin, Fatih; Erik, Gökhan; Aksu, Hakan; Erdem, Ercan; Karayücel, Sedat; Bat, Levent (2022-05-05)
© 2022 Elsevier LtdSpatial and temporal changes in some ecological characteristics (i.e. biomass, abundance, morphometrics, sex-composition, growth parameters and population dynamics) of the invasive veined rapa whelk (Rapana venosa) were studied off Sinop Bay, in the southern Black Sea. The whelk specimens were sampled from three depths (15 m, 25 m and 35 m) at monthly intervals between November 2005 and October 2007. Custom-made pots were deployed for the capture of R. venosa individuals. Monthly distribu...
Development and lipid storage in Calanus euxinus from the Black and Marmara seas: Variabilities due to habitat conditions
Svetlichny, LS; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; Hubareva, ES; Besiktepe, S; Isinibilir, M (2006-01-01)
Oil sac volume, gonad size and moulting patterns were investigated in the copepod Calanus euxinus inhabiting deep and shallow zones of the Black Sea and penetrating into the Marmara Sea. In summer the C. euxinus population in deep layers of the Black Sea was dominated by pre-diapause and diapausing postmoult copepodite stage V (CV) with small sexually undifferentiated gonads and mean lipid content of 14.1 +/- 6.0% of body volume. The lipid content of deep-living females was 7.2 +/- 4.2% of body volume. At t...
Nutritional condition of female Calanus euxinus from cyclonic and anticyclonic regions of the Black Sea
Yuneva, TV; Svetlichny, LS; Yunev, OA; Romanova, ZA; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan; Bingel, F; Uysal, Zahit; Yilmaz, A; Shulman, GE (1999-01-01)
The content and composition of lipids in Calanus euxinus females were studied in cyclonic and anticyclonic regions in the southern Black Sea during the period of persistent density stratification (September 1996). The lipid content of C, euxinus from cyclonic regions was greater than of individuals from anticyclonic regions (average 101.9 and 58.8 mu g ind.(-1), respectively). Total Lipid content (mainly wax esters, 70 to 72%, and triacylglycerols, 8 to 13%) of female C. euxinus was correlated with chloroph...
Population structure, vertical distribution and diel migration of Sagitta setosa (Chaetognatha) in the south-western part of the Black Sea
Besiktepe, S; Unsal, M (2000-04-01)
The population structure of Sagitta serosa from the south-western part of the Black Sea was examined between May 1994 and December 1996. In addition, the vertical distribution and diel vertical migration of S.setosa were studied for juveniles (less than or equal to 5 mm) and adults (>5 mm) in April 1995, September 1995 and June 1996. The population structure studies showed that a new generation was introduced in September. Breeding was most intensive from June to November, indicated by the frequency of smal...
Seasonality of zooplankton in the Southern Black Sea and genetics of Calanus Euxinus (Copepoda)
Ünal, Ebru; Kıdeyş, Ahmet; Graduate School of Marine Sciences (2002)
Seasonality and composition of zooplankton was comparatively studied at two stations (inshore and offshore) off Sinop, in southern Black Sea in 1999. Intra-specific genetic differentiation of the copepod Calanus euxinus dwelling in different layers along the water column was also investigated in samples obtained from different regions of the southern Black Sea in September 2000. A total of 64 zooplankton species were identified in the Sinop region in 1999, most of which being meroplankton. Out of these, 17 ...
