Taxonomic composition of the meroplankton and the pelagic polychaetes of the Cilician basin shelf waters was investigated for the first time. Analysis of monthly net samples shows that the meroplankton and the pelagic polychaetes of the region are represented under 5 phyla, 10 classes, and 34 families. Pelagic nectochaete larvae of the family Spionidae (Polychaeta) and zoeas of family Grapsidae (Decapoda) were the dominating groups throughout the year. Typical stenohaline taxa formed by classes of Enteropneusta, Ophiuroidea, Asteroidea, Echinoidea, and Holothuroidea were also observed. The predominance of the decapod larvae was a distinguishing feature of the winter period. Diversity was highest during the spring (Margalef's Index d = 4.3, 5.4, and 5.6 for March, April, and May, respectively) and lowest during August (d = 1.9) and November (d = 2.3). Results of multivariate analysis (Multi-Dimensional Scaling) revealed a distinct summer population that varied greatly from the rest of the periods. Temperature rather than salinity was found to be more effective in controlling the abundance and diversity in the region.

Seasonal Changes in the Composition and Abundance ofZooplankton in the Seas of the Mediterranean Basin
Kovalev, Av; Mazzocchı, Mg; Toklu Alıçlı, Benin; Skryabın, Va; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2003-01-01)
Seasonal changes in the composition, abundance and biomass of zooplankton in the seas of the Mediterranean basin (the Mediterranean, Black and Azov seas) have been reviewed using our own data and data from the literature. In the deep-water central regions of the seas, the seasonal cycle of zooplankton abundance is characterised by one maximum occurring in spring or summer. In the coastal regions, two to three peaks (spring, summer and autumn) exist for the zooplankton abundance. The amplitude of seasonal fl...
What is the Impact of Lessepsian Species on Eastern Mediterranean Fisheries?
Lefkaditou, Evgenia; Abdelaty, Mohamed; Bariche, Michel; Corsini-Foka, Mariolina; Dimech, Mark; Economidis, Panagiotis; Gücü, Ali Cemal; Kalogirou, Stefanos; Konnaris, Kostas; Lahouf, Imad; Madi, Abdalnaser; Majdalani, Samir; Mahmoud, Hatem Hanafy; Michailidis, Nikolas; El Mokdad, Dahej; Nader, Manal; Qamheyih, Mohamed; Orsi-Relini, Lidia; Pagiatas, Giorgos; et.al. (2011-10-29)
The migration of Lessepsian species, which was the result of the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869 and further facilitated by human activities and environmental conditions, seems to play a key role for fisheries particularly in the Levant basin. However, there is still lack of accurate data for most of the Lessepsian species in order to evaluate their positive or negative effect to the fisheries catches and local fish stocks. The Project "Scientific and Institutional Cooperation to Support Responsible Fishe...
Seasonal distribution of fish eggs and larvae off sinop (the southern Black Sea) in 1999-2000
Satilmis, HH; Gordina, AD; Bat, L; Bircan, R; Culha, M; Akbulut, M; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2003-05-01)
The seasonal distribution of fish eggs and larvae off Sinop, the central southern Black Sea, was studied by using vertical and horizontal tows at two stations at biweekly intervals between January 1999 and November 2000. Besides basic oceanographic parameters, macro gelatinous was also sampled to evaluate their relation to fish eggs and larvae. Eggs or larvae of a total 23 fish species were present in the samples. Most of the species were found to occur during spring and summer. It is observed that especial...
Vertical distribution of marine cyanobacteria Synechococcus spp. in the Black, Marmara, Aegean, and eastern Mediterranean seas
Uysal, Zahit (2006-01-01)
The vertical distributions of the unicellular cyanobacteria Synechococcus were studied in several highly contrasting seas: the Black Sea, Sea of Marmara, Aegean Sea, and Mediterranean Sea. Cell abundances varied significantly on both vertical and horizontal scales in all physically and spatially discrete water masses. Epifluorescence microscope cell counts from all seas clearly showed that majority of the population remains suspended in the surface-mixed layer and decreases gradually towards the base of the...
Seasonality of Mesozooplankton in the Southern Black Sea off Sinop Between 2002 and 2004
Üstün, Funda; Bat, Levent; Şahin, Fatih; Birinci Özdemir, Zekiye; Kıdeyş, Ahmet Erkan (2016-12-01)
The monthly and long-term fluctuations of mesozooplankton abundance, biomass, and taxonomic composition in the Sinop inner harbor (southern Black Sea) between 2005 and 2009 are presented in the present study. In total, 31 mesozooplankton taxa were identified during the study. The recorded average mesozooplankton abundance and biomass were 34,323 ± 7580 ind. m and 1208 ± 460 mg m in 2005, 95,063 ± 31,434 ind m and 1787 ± 604 mg m in 2006, 97,626 ± 12,141 ind m and 1034 ± 20 mg m in 2007, 91,918 ± 10,476 ind ...
