Indoor concentrations of 34 volatile organic compounds (VOCs), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and ozone (O-3) were measured at 32 sampling points in classes, offices and hallways of the Environmental Engineering Department (ENVE) in the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara. Outdoor samples were also collected around the department during the sampling campaigns. Two passive sampling campaigns, one in summer and the other one in winter, were conducted. Indoor concentrations of most pollutants were higher than their outdoor concentrations owing to the presence of indoor sources. The notable exception to this general pattern is O3. The average indoor/outdoor concentration ratio (I/O) was 10.9 in winter and 3.7 in summer. For most of the VOCs, the winter concentrations were higher than their summer concentrations due to more effective ventilation of the building and variation of emissions during summer months. Compounds with higher concentrations in the summer samples were the ones that were strongly affected by solvent evaporation in laboratories. Concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and inorganic pollutants including sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O-3) were measured using passive samplers in both indoor and outdoor environments at 2, 5, 8, 13, 17, 24, and 29 m from the ground level at a high-rise building in the Middle East Technical University campus in Ankara, Turkey. The measured indoor concentrations of Sigma 24VOCs were highly variable, ranging from 98g m(-3) (at the ground floor) to 235.3g m(-3) (at the...
Spatial and temporal distribution of inorganic and organic pollutant concentrations at Northwestern Anatolia

Concentrations of inorganic pollutants including NO2, SO2, O3 and organic pollutants including benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene and m&p-xylene, which are known as BTEX compounds were measured on a seasonal basis in 13 cities located in the Central and Northern parts of Anatolian Plateau. Cities included in measurements were Ankara, Bartın, Bolu, Çankırı, Düzce, Eskişehir, Karabük, Kastamonu, Kırıkkale, Kırşehir, Kütahya, Yozgat, and Zonguldak. Sampling was performed in four seasonal campaigns in eac...

Ambient concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and ground-level ozone (O-3) were measured at 55 locations around a densely populated industrial zone, hosting a petrochemical complex (Petkim), a petroleum refinery (Tupras), ship-dismantling facilities, several iron and steel plants, and a gas-fired power plant. Five passive sampling campaigns were performed covering summer and winter seasons of 2005 and 2007. Elevated concentrations of VOCs, NO2 and...
Atmospheric trace element and major ion concentrations over the eastern Mediterranean Sea: Identification of anthropogenic source regions

Concentrations of elements and ions measured in aerosol samples collected from March 1992 to the end of December 1993 were investigated to identify source regions affecting chemical composition of aerosols in the eastern Mediterranean atmosphere. Collected samples were analyzed for approximately 40 elements and ions using a combination of atomic absorption spectrometry, instrumental neutron activation analysis, ion chromatography and colorimetry. Statistical techniques, such as enrichment factors and a non-...
Indoor radon concentrations and radon doses at three districts of Ankara, Turkey and raising public awareness on the issue
Kildir, Mehmet; Gokmen, Inci; Gökmen, Ali (2016-01-01)
Indoor radon concentrations at METU, CIG-DEM and DOSTLAR in Ankara were measured using electrets. The statistical analysis of the data indicated a lognormal distribution of radon concentrations, with no significant difference between CIGDEM and DOSTLAR with geometric means of GM = 87.5 and 54.5 Bq m(-3), respectively. Radon concentrations did not change seasonally at CIGDEM which contain modern buildings, but at the slum district DOSTLAR, with poor insulation of houses a seasonal variation was observed. Ann...
