The Bornova Flysch Zone (BFZ) in NW Anatolia comprises several olistoliths or tectonic slivers, representing various parts of the Izmir-Ankara ocean. Radiolarian assemblages extracted from one of the olistoliths of the BFZ, cropping out along the Sogutulu section, to the NE Manisa city, were studied in detail. The lowermost part of the section contains latest Bajocian - early Callovian radiolarian taxa, followed by radiolarian assemblages indicating Late Jurassic to early Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian) ages. Previous studies reveal that the Izmir-Ankara oceanic basin was initially opened during late Ladinian - early Carnian. The new radiolarian data obtained from this olistolith reveals that relatively condensed, and possibly more or less continuous, pelagic sedimentation took place during the late Middle Jurassic to early Late Cretaceous in a non-volcanic oceanic basin closer to the Tauride-Anatolide platform margin.

Middle Carnian Arc-Type Basalts from the Lycian Nappes, Southwestern Anatolia: Early Late Triassic Subduction in the Northern Branch of Neotethys
Sayıt, Kaan; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2015-11-01)
The Turunc Unit, which represents one of the tectonic slices within the Lycian Nappes in southwestern Anatolia, preserves the remnants derived from the northern branch of Neotethys. The unit includes basalts intercalated with pelagic limestones of middle Carnian age (early Late Triassic) based on the characteristic radiolarian assemblage of the Tetraporobrachia haeckeli Zone. The Turunc lavas reflect trace element signatures resembling those from subduction zones, displaying selective enrichment of Th and l...
An olistostrome-melange belt formed along a suture: Bornova Flysch zone, western Turkey
Okay, Aral; İşintek, İsmail; Altıner, Demir; Altıner, Sevinç; Okay, Nilgün (2012-09-28)
The Bornova Flysch Zone (BFZ) in western Turkey is a regional olistostrome-melange belt located between the Izmir-Ankara Tethyan suture in northwest and the Menderes Massif in the southeast. The BFZ consists mostly of tectonized gravity mass flows. The blocks are Mesozoic limestone and ophiolite, which are enclosed in Cretaceous-Paleocene sheared sandstone and shale. The limestone blocks are of two types. The first type consists of Late Triassic to Cretaceous shallow marine carbonates. The second type has a...
GEOLOGICAL AND GEOCHEMICAL EVIDENCE FOR A LATE CRETACEOUS CONTINENTAL ARC IN THE CENTRAL PONTIDES, NORTHERN TURKEY
Ellero, Alessandro; Ottria, Giuseppe; Sayıt, Kaan; Catanzariti, Rita; Frassi, Chiara; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Marroni, Michele; Pandolfi, Luca (2015-01-01)
In the Central Pontides (Northern Turkey), south of Tosya, a tectonic unit consisting of not-metamorphic volcanic rocks and overlying sedimentary succession is exposed inside a fault-bounded elongated block. It is restrained within a wide shear zone, where the Intra-Pontide suture zone, the Sakarya terrane and the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture zone are juxtaposed as result of strike-slip activity of the North Anatolian shear zone. The volcanic rocks are mainly basalts and basaltic andesites (with their pyroc...
GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF GRANITOIDS ALONG THE WESTERN MARGIN OF THE CENTRAL ANATOLIAN CRYSTALLINE COMPLEX AND THEIR TECTONIC IMPLICATIONS
AKIMAN, O; ERLER, A; GONCUOGLU, MC; Güleç, Nilgün Türkan; GEVEN, A; TURELI, TK; KADIOGLU, YK (1993-12-01)
The closely related assemblage of igneous and metamorphic rocks that lie within a triangular area approximately bounded by the Tuzgolu Fault, the Ecemis Fault and the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan Suture and between the lines connecting Ankara, Sivas and Nigde is called the Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC). The granitoids cropping out within the CACC can be divided areally into three groups: (1) a large number of individual small plutons which form an arcuate set and curve from NE-SW to NW-SE and extend...
Geochemical constraints on the Cenozoic, OIB-type alkaline volcanic rocks of NW Turkey: Implications for mantle sources and melting processes
ALDANMAZ, ERCAN; KÖPRÜBAŞI, NEZİHİ; GÜRER, ÖMER FEYZİ; Kaymakcı, Nuretdin; Gourgaud, Alan (Elsevier BV, 2006-01-01)
The volcanic province of North-West Turkey contains a number of intra-continental alkaline volcanic eruption sequences formed along the localized extensional basins developed in relation with the Late Cenozoic extensional processes. The volcanic suite comprises the extracted melt products of adiabatic decompression melting of the mantle that are represented by small-volume intra-continental plate volcanic rocks of alkaline olivine basalts and basanites with compositions representative of mantle-derived, pri...
