Mechanical milling of ductile metals and alloys into fine powders is difficult to achieve due to particle agglomeration. Even though cryogenic milling and/or wet milling can lead to substantial reduction of particle size, the production of fine powders from ductile metals and alloys is a difficult process. The current study deals with the milling of Mg and examines alternative processing methods that would yield an efficient size reduction. Two methods were studied; milling with MgH2 addition, and milling the powders pre-deformed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). The study showed that both methods are successful in preventing particle agglomeration resulting in a significant reduction in particle size. Equal channel angular pressing has the advantage that could be applied to all metals and alloys whereas milling with hydride could only be applied to metals forming their own hydride. It is concluded that of the two methods, milling with hydride addition is a more effective method of size reduction.

Manufacturing of copper cold plates via metal fused filament fabrication and their characterization
Bacıkoğlu, Mehmet Canberk; Yaman, Ulaş; Department of Mechanical Engineering (2023-1)
Unlike traditional manufacturing methods, Additive Manufacturing (AM) is one of the most popular methods to produce parts with complex geometries using a wide range of materials. Atomic Diffusion Additive Manufacturing (ADAM) is an AM method to manufacture metal parts by using filaments which include metal powders encased in plastic binders. Various types of materials can be 3D printed with this method, including stainless steel, copper, tool steel, Inconel, and titanium. In this study, ADAM method is used ...
Synthesis of Poly(silyne-co-hydridocarbyne) for Silicon Carbide Production
NUR, YUSUF; Toppare, Levent Kamil (2013-01-01)
Pre-ceramic polymers have previously been shown to be polymeric precursors to silicon carbide, diamond and diamond-like carbon. Here, we report the synthesis of a pre-ceramic polymer, poly(silyne-co-hydridocarbyne), which was electrochemically synthesized from one monomer containing both silicon and carbon in its structure. The polymer is soluble in common solvents such as CHCl3, CH2Cl2 and THF. Since the polymer contains both silyne and carbyne on its backbone, it can be easily converted to silicon carbide...
Production of in situ aluminum-titanium diboride master alloy formed by slag-metal reaction
CHANGIZI, Ahmad; Kalkanlı, Ali; SEVINC, NACİ (Elsevier BV, 2011-01-12)
Al-TiB(2) master alloys have received much attention in recent years owing to their potential as efficient grain refiners for aluminum foundry alloys. In this study, the process of production of master alloys was investigated to develop a low cost method, namely, slag-metal reaction. This method can be used to fabricate Al-TiB2 master alloy in situ from the TiO(2)-H(3)BO(3)-Na(3)AlF(6) and Al system. Since the price of the raw materials is low and the technology is simple, the processing technique appears t...
Development of high temperature creep resistant aluminium based sand cast magnesium alloys
Yalınız, Emrah; Kalkanlı, Ali; Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (2018)
The aim of this thesis is to develop alternative sand casting aluminum based magnesium alloys to substitute current sand castable helicopter transmission housing magnesium alloys such as ZE41A and EV31A. AZ91 magnesium alloy has also been preferred for helicopter transmission housing material. However, the lower creep resistance above 120 oC due to the presence of -(Mg17Al12) phase in the microstructure and showing varying mechanical properties in different section thicknesses limit the usage of AZ91 in th...
Production of boron nitride using chemical vapor deposition method
Mercan, Özge; Özbelge, Önder; Sezgi, Naime Aslı; Department of Chemical Engineering (2014)
Boron nitride is a promising material with its outstanding characteristics like chemical inertness, large band gap, high oxidation resistance and thermal conductivity. It is also used as ceramic matrix component which transfers external load and deflects matrix cracks. Therefore, it has become a subject matter for many studies. In this study, the process of boron nitride (BN) production from diborane (B2H6) and ammonia (NH3) on tungsten (W) substrate in impinging jet reactor is investigated using chemical v...
