A simple method for the determination of ultra-trace amounts of germanium in natural waters has been developed. Germanium was preconcentrated using silica having mercapto functional groups, namely mercapto silica and determined by hydride generation flame atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS). Utilising mercapto silica, satisfactory recovery values (> 95%) were obtained at natural pH, for germanate concentrations as low as 50 ng 1(-1) Considering the highest preconcentration factor (400-fold) obtained, the sensitivity and 3s-detection limit of mercapto silica-HGAAS system can be expressed as 3.65 ng 1(-1)/0.0044 AU and 0.813 ng 1(-1), respectively. Interference effects of diverse ions were investigated for HGAAS and mercapto silica-HGAAS systems.

SELECTIVE PRECONCENTRATION OF ARSENITE ON MERCAPTO-MODIFIED SILICA-GEL
HOWARD, AG; Volkan, Mürvet; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (1987-02-01)
A surface-modified silica gel has been developed for the pre-concentration of arsenite from natural waters. The reaction of silica gel with (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane produces a mercapto-modified silica gel with a silver capacity of ca. 0.9 mmol g–1. This material selectively removes arsenite from samples that also contain arsenate, monomethylarsonate and dimethylarsinate, and can be employed for both the column and batch pre-concentration of arsenite. Under column and batch conditions recoveries of...
PRECONCENTRATION OF SOME TRACE-METALS FROM SEA-WATER ON A MERCAPTO-MODIFIED SILICA-GEL
Volkan, Mürvet; Ataman, Osman Yavuz (1987-10-01)
Silica modified by the addition of mercapto chelating groups has been developed for the pre-concentration of trace metals from natural waters. This material removes cadmium, copper, lead and zinc from aqueous solution and can be employed for the pre-concentration of these metals by both column and batch techniques. Under column and batch conditions recoveries larger than 95% were common. For batch extractions of cadmium, zinc, copper and lead from sea water, recoveries of 91 ± 5, 98 ± 4, 97 ± 4 and 96 ± 5%,...
Preparation and microstructure of sol-gel derived silver-doped silica
Akkopru, Betul; Durucan, Caner (2007-08-01)
Silver-doped silica was prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS, Si(OC2H5)(4)) in the presence of a silver nitrate (AgNO3) solution by two different synthesis methods. In the first synthesis route, sol-gel mixtures were prepared using an acid catalyst. In the second synthesis route, silver-doped silica gels were formed by two-step acid/base catalysis. For the same concentration of silver dopant [AgNO3]/[TEOS] = 0.015 acid-catalyzed sol-gel formed a microporous silica with a...
Preconcentration and speciation of iron by using renewable surface flow injection system (RS-FIA)
Tekin, Serap; Volkan, Mürvet; Department of Chemistry (2003)
The main aim of this study is to combine the sol-gel technology and renewable surface flow injection analysis (RS-FIA) techniques for iron speciation and determination. Thus the home-made FIA system, which consists of 2 syringe pumps and 3 multi-position selection valves, is modified with two flow cells (magnetic cell and jet ring cell) in order to be suitable for renewable surface flow injection technique. All the computer programs used for flow injection analysis are modified to control the whole system a...
Pretreatment of cotton stalks with ionic liquids for enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis of cellulose and ethanol production
Haykır, Nazife Işık; Bölükbaşı, Ufuk; Department of Chemical Engineering (2013)
This study aims efficient conversion of cotton stalks to cellulosic ethanol through ionic liquid pretreatment and enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis. Among several ionic liquids, EMIMAc exhibited the most striking impact on cotton stalks with respect to the changes in biomass structure and digestibility. Cotton stalks, which were subjected to EMIMAc pretreatment at 10% (w cotton stalks/w EMIMAc) of biomass loading and 150°C for 30 minutes, were found to be 9 times more digestible than untreated cotton stalks. Be...
