Boron is an essential element for plant growth, but it may also result in toxicity when present in excessive amounts. In this study, continuous polymer enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) was developed to selectively recover aqueous boron species (collectively termed "boron" hereafter) from solution. The PEUF process consisted of complexing boron to a water-soluble polymer, removing all non-complexed solutes by UF, restoring the unloaded polymer, and isolating the newly freed boron by UF. Three different polymers were synthesized to complex boron. One was derived from N-meth-yl-D-glucamine (P1). Two others were derived from iminodipropyleneglycol (P2 and P2G). Operating parameters such as the boron/polymer ratio (0.01-1), pH value (7-10), and polymer type (P1, P2, and P2G) were assessed. An increase of the pH value led to increased boron retention. As well, a decreased loading value enhanced retention. A maximum retention of 90.1% exceeded the highest values reported in the literature under similar conditions. The permeate flux remained constant at approximate to 20 L/m(2) h, and operation was unaffected by classic problems such as fouling. The results showed that continuous PEUF utilizing the above polymers could serve as an alternative method for the removal of environmental boron.

Utilization of pretreated molasses for serine alkaline protease production with recombinant Bacillus species
Calik, G; Pehlivan, N; Kalender, N; Ozdamar, TH; Çalık, Pınar (Informa UK Limited, 2003-05-01)
Recombinant Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis , and Bacillus licheniformis were used for the production of serine alkaline protease (SAP) utilizing chemically and/or physically pretreated molasses. The highest enzyme activity was obtained with r- Bacillus subtilis , with the complex medium involving physically treated molasses having 20 kg m(-3) initial sucrose concentration in small-scale, agitation- and heating rate-controlled bioreactors at t=63 h. Effects of oxygen transfer ...
Cytochrome P4501A and associated mixed-function oxidase induction in fish as a biomarker for toxic carcinogenic pollutants in the aquatic environment
Arinc, E; Sen, A; Bozcaarmutlu, A (Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2000-06-01)
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins, dibenzofurans, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) present in polluted environment induce cytochrome P4501A (CYP1A) isozyme in fish, which in turn results in a marked increased production of carcinogenic metabolites from PAHs. The induction of hepatic CYP1A in fish by certain classes of chemicals has been suggested as an early warning system, a "most sensitive biological response" for assessing environmental contamination conditions. This has implications f...
Development of a 635nm-Laser Diode Spectrometer for Continuous Monitoring of Amino Nitrogen in the Beet Sugar Industry
ÜLGEN, Ahmet; Gökmen, Ali; ŞAHİN, Uğur; Herdem, Huelya; Cengiz, Hasan I. (Informa UK Limited, 2009-01-01)
The quality of sugar beet is affected by harmful nitrogen compounds. Although nitrogen is one of the essential elements for plants, introduction of excess nitrogen as fertilizer to the soil increases the nitrogen containing compounds in beet which deteriorates the quality of sugar production. Hence, the concentration of soluble nitrogen in beets was monitored as a routine process in the sugar industry. In this work, a low cost, but very long life time laser diode spectrometer, was developed for continuous m...

Effects of concentration changes in initiator species Na2SO3, (NH4)2S2O8 and CuSO4, and emulsifier, ammonium stearate, on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) emulsion polymerization kinetics and on product particle size were experimentally investigated. It was observed that to obtain industrially significant rates and overall conversions, not only an optimum concentration ratio of Na2SO3/(NH4)2S2O8/CuSO 4 must be used, but also the concentrations of these species must be above certain limits. Increasing the concentr...
High performance Pt nanoparticles prepared by new surfactants for C-1 to C-3 alcohol oxidation reactions
ŞEN, FATİH; Gökağaç Arslan, Gülsün; Sen, Selda (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2013-09-07)
In this study, platinum nanoparticles have been prepared using PtCl4 as a starting material and 1-hexylamine, N-methylhexylamine, N,N-dimethylhexylamine, 1-heptylamine, N-methylheptylamine, and N, N-dimethylheptylamine as surfactants. All these surfactants were used in this synthesis, for the first time, to explore the effect of primary, secondary, and tertiary amine and chain length on the size and catalytic activity toward C1-C3 alcohol electro-oxidation. The electrochemical performance of all catalysts w...
