Using Computer Spreadsheets in Teaching Mechanisms

Söylemez, Eres
In this paper the use of widely available user friendly spreadsheet programs such as Microsoft (R) Excel in teaching mechanisms is explained and its advantages over off-the-shelf programs are shown. Instead of using specific costly programs for the analysis and synthesis of different mechanisms, the students are first thought certain features of Excel and later starting with the analysis of single loop mechanisms, the solution of more complex problems in the analysis and synthesis of mechanisms are attempted. The simulation of mechanisms can be achieved by using the Chart and control toolbox features of Excel. Students are able to prepare their own spreadsheets for the solution of different mechanism problems. In this article different examples using spreadsheet program will be explained and its benefits as an educational tool will be demonstrated.

Using documentation as a teaching tool in Turkish early childhood programmes
Yılmaz, Arif; Şahin, Figen; Buldu, Mehmet; Ülker Erdem, Ayça; Buldu, Elif; Ünal, Hazal Begüm (null; 2015-10-07)
This study examined the contribution of pedagogical documentation as a teaching tool to the practices of ECE teachers as well as the support mechanisms for- and challenges in using it.The use of pedagogical documentation as a teaching/learning tool is well documented in the literature, however, only a few studies (Aghayan et al., 2005; Buldu, 2010; Emilson & Samuelsson, 2014; Goldhaber & Smith, 1997; MacDonald, 2007) examined the contribution of it to early childhood teaching. The process pedagogical docume...
Advanced methods for result and score caching in web search engines
Yafay, Erman.; Altıngövde, İsmail Sengör; Department of Computer Engineering (2019)
Search engines employ caching techniques in main memory to improve system efficiency and scalability. In this thesis, we focus on improving the cache performance for web search engines where our contributions can be separated into two main parts. Firstly, we investigate the impact of the sample size for frequency statistics for most popular cache eviction strategies in the literature, and show that cache performance improves with larger samples, i.e., by storing the frequencies of all (or, most of) the quer...
Analysis of tracer tests with simple spreadsheet models
Akın, Serhat (2001-03-01)
Interpretations of tracer tests involve matching field data by the use of computer simulation programs. As the complexity of the simulator model increases, the number of trial runs needed to fit field data satisfactorily increases rapidly. The conventional fitting procedure can thus become cumbersome and can involve prohibitive computer costs. This study presents a new methodology that is devised to model tests in heterogeneous formations. These rigorous simulators written in high-level computer languages a...
A Practitioner's Guide for Static Index Pruning
Altıngövde, İsmail Sengör; Ulusoy, Oezguer (2009-01-01)
We compared the term- and document-centric static index pruning approaches as described in the literature and investigate their sensitivity to the scoring functions employed during the pruning and actual retrieval stages.
Flexible Content Extraction and Querying for Videos
Demir, Utku; KOYUNCU, Murat; Yazıcı, Adnan; Yilmaz, Turgay; SERT, MUSTAFA (2011-10-28)
In this study, a multimedia database system which includes a semantic content extractor, a high-dimensional index structure and an intelligent fuzzy object-oriented database component is proposed. The proposed system is realized by following a component-oriented approach. It supports different flexible query capabilities for the requirements of video users, which is the main focus of this paper. The query performance of the system (including automatic semantic content extraction) is tested and analyzed in t...
