An embankment slope on a major highway totally collapsed during 12 November 1999 Duzce earthquake (M-w = 7.1) due to the intense near field ground motion. The slope had performed satisfactorily, without even minor deformations or cracks, during the Izmit earthquake (M-w = 7.4), another major event that occurred 3 months before and was far field. Predominantly coarse-grained fill of the embankment exhibited typical non-brittle behavior during laboratory tests, implying that the prefailure shear strength would remain relatively unchanged. Stability and failure mechanism of the embankment slope were investigated through a series of static, pseudostatic and fully coupled non-linear dynamic analyses. While respective performances were correctly predicted by the pseudostatic method on a failure-no failure basis during the two earthquakes, the computed failure surface geometry did not conform to that observed. Fully coupled dynamic response analysis, on the other hand, predicted the failure mechanism and failure surface configuration in conformance with the post-failure observations. Computed displacements were generally less than those observed and critically dependent on the potential uncertainties.

An evaluation of Guldurcek dam response during 6 June 2000 orta earthquake
Ozkan, MY; Ozyazicioglu, M; Aksar, UD (Elsevier BV, 2006-05-01)
Guldurcek dam located in the central Anatolia was subjected to longitudinal cracks of not wider than 2 cm during 6 June 2000 Orta earthquake. In this study, a brief account of the 6 June 2000 Orta earthquake is given and the results of dynamic FEM analyses of the dam, incorporating the non-linear soil properties under six selected base motions, are presented. Of the six base motions used in the analyses, three have been modified from the European strong motion database having similar ground motion parameter...
An evaluation of Surgu Dam response during 5 May 1986 earthquake
Ozkan, MY; Erdik, M; Tuncer, MA; Yilmaz, C (Elsevier BV, 1996-01-01)
Surgu Dam, located in southeast Turkey was subjected to longitudinal cracks on the dam crest and simultaneous settlement on the upstream part of the day, during 5 May 1986 Malatya Earthquake. In the following, a brief account of the 5 May 1986 earthquake and the damage occurred in the dam is reviewed, and the results of a dynamic finite element analysis incorporating the non-linear soil properties are presented. It is observed that, a Newmark type permanent displacement analysis carried out under simulated ...
An evaluation of the strong ground motion recorded during the May 1, 2003 Bingol Turkey, earthquake
Akkar, S; Boore, DM; Gulkan, P (Informa UK Limited, 2005-03-01)
An important record of ground motion from a M6.4 earthquake occurring on May 1, 2003, at epicentral and fault distances of about 12 and 9 km, respectively, was obtained at a station near the city of Bingol, Turkey. The maximum peak ground values of 0.55 g and 36 cm/s are among the largest ground-motion amplitudes recorded in Turkey. From simulations and comparisons with ground motions from other earthquakes of comparable magnitude, we conclude that the ground motion over a range of frequencies is unusually ...
A comparative study on the actual and estimated seismic response of Kiralkizi Dam in Turkey
Çetin, Kemal Önder; Batmaz, S; Karabiber, S (Informa UK Limited, 2005-07-01)
Kiralkizi Dam, a 120 in high earthfill dam located in Diyarbakir city, Turkey, was shaken by a moment magnitude, M-w = 4.6 earthquake at an epicentral distance of 8 km, on December 24, 2000, at 13:31 local time. The seismic response of the dam was assessed by using spectral ratios between (i) available crest and foundation records (C/F), (ii) horizontal and vertical components of the recorded motions (H/V), (iii) by performing 2 dimensional finite difference-based seismic response analyses (Flac-2D), and (i...
Evaluation of site conditions for the Ankara Basin of Turkey based on seismic site characterization of near-surface geologic materials
Kockar, M. K.; Akgün, Haluk; Rathje, E. M. (Elsevier BV, 2010-01-01)
Regional site conditions relevant for seismic hazard studies can be derived from various geologic, seismologic, and geotechnical sources. In this study, site conditions are derived for the Ankara Basin in Turkey by merging in-situ seismic measurements of dynamic properties, geologic information, and some geotechnical boring information. Field seismic refraction surveys were performed at 259 sites in the project area to classify and characterize Plio-Pleistocene fluvial deposits and Quaternary alluvial and t...
