This paper presents an experimental research aimed at developing a new rubber-based seismic isolator called 'Ball Rubber Bearing (BRB)'. The BRB is composed of a conventional steel-reinforced multi-layered rubber bearing with its central hole filled with small diameter steel balls that are used to provide energy dissipation capacity through friction. A large set of BRBs with different geometrical and material properties are manufactured and tested under reversed cyclic horizontal loading at different vertical compressive load levels. Extensive test results indicate that steel balls do not only increase the energy dissipation capacity of the elastomeric bearing (EB), but also increase its horizontal and vertical stiffness. It is also observed that the energy dissipation capacity of a BRB does not degrade as the number of loading cycles increases. Copyright (C) 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Evaluation of displacement coefficient method for seismically retrofitted buildings with various ductility capacities
Dicleli, Murat (Wiley, 2014-07-25)
This research study is aimed at evaluating the accuracy of the displacement coefficient method (DCM) of FEMA 440 and associated nonlinear static procedure (NLSP) for actual buildings with soft story mechanism and various ductility capacities. The DCM and associated NLSP are evaluated using two existing seismically vulnerable buildings with soft story mechanism. The buildings are first retrofitted using a ductile steel-brace-link system to represent those with good ductility capacity and then retrofitted wit...
An experimental study on steel-encased buckling-restrained brace hysteretic dampers
Eryasar, Mehmet Emrah; Topkaya, Cem (Wiley, 2010-04-25)
This paper describes a seismic test program performed on 12 steel-encased buckling-restrained braces (BRBs). The use of rolled or built-up buckling-restraining mechanisms with welded or bolted attachments was examined. In addition, the effects of bolt pretension, core-to-encasing attachment details, aspect ratio of core segment and imperfections due to manufacturing on the brace response were investigated. All specimens were subjected to a stepwise incremental quasi-static testing protocol with a maximum ax...
An improvement to linear-elastic procedures for seismic performance assessment
Gunay, Mehmet Selim; Sucuoğlu, Haluk (Wiley, 2010-07-10)
An improved linear-elastic analysis procedure is developed in this paper as a simple approximate method for displacement-based seismic assessment of the existing buildings. The procedure is mainly based on reducing the stiffness of structural members that are expected to respond in the inelastic range in a single global iteration step. Modal spectral displacement demands are determined from the equal displacement rule. Response predictions obtained from the proposed procedure are evaluated comparatively by ...
Comparison of fundamental properties of new types of fiber-mesh-reinforced seismic isolators with conventional isolators
Naghshineh, Ali Karimzadeh; Akyüz, Uğurhan; Caner, Alp (Wiley, 2014-02-01)
New types of fiber-reinforced rubber-based seismic isolators have been a research interest for a number of engineers in the past decade. These new types of isolators can have similar seismic performances compared with the conventional ones. In most of the previous researches, the fiber-reinforced rubber-based isolators is usually manufactured with placing fiber sheets between precut rubber layers with the use of a bonding agent. This research differs from the previous researches in terms of manufacturing pr...
Comparison of suction and oedometer methods for the measurement of swell pressure
Cokca, E (Geological Society of London, 2000-05-01)
In this paper, a thermocouple psychrometric technique is used to measure soil suction and assess the reliability of a swell pressure prediction method. Kaolinite-bentonite clay mixtures were prepared to obtain expansive soils with a wide range of plasticities. Suction measurements using thermocouple psychrometers and constant volume swell tests in oedometers were made on statically compacted :specimens. Soil suction-water content relationships were evaluated. The results indicate a linear relationship betwe...
