Thermogravimetry of selected bentonites

2002-10-01
In this research the application of thermal analysis techniques (TG-DTA) to the characterization of bentonite samples is presented. The thermal behavior of 4 bentonite samples was investigated using simultaneous thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) techniques. It was observed that all bentonite samples exhibit 2 weight loss events on heating. The first weight loss event corresponds to the loss of molecular water from the exchange layer, whereas the second weight loss event corresponds to the dehydroxylation of the silicate lattice. It was also observed that in both weight loss regions (loss of molecular water from the exchange layer and dehydroxylation of the silicate lattice) higher peak temperatures were obtained as the heating rate is increased.

Rheological properties of asphaltite-water slurries
Hicyilmaz, Cahit; Ozun, Savas; Altun, Naci Emre (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2006-09-20)
In this study, the rheological characteristics of asphaltite- water slurries ( AWSs) were investigated with respect to some of the most important parameters in the preparation of slurries. The effects of pulp density, chemical addition, pulp pH, and particle size on the rheological behavior and viscosity of AWSs were studied. The role of demineralization of asphaltite was also investigated, and rheological properties of raw and relatively demineralized asphaltites were compared. Results showed that viscosit...
Experimental and Numerical Simulation of Oil Recovery from Oil Shales by Electrical Heating
Hascakir, Bema; Babadagli, Tayfun; Akın, Serhat (American Chemical Society (ACS), 2008-11-01)
The recovery characteristics of four different oil shale samples were tested experimentally using the retort technique. To accomplish efficient temperature distribution, the thermal conductivity of the oil shale samples was increased by the addition of three different iron powders. The doses of iron powders were optimized for each oil shale sample based on the highest oil production value experimentally. The experiments were then modeled using the electrical heating option of a commercial reservoir simulato...
DSC study on combustion and pyrolysis behaviors of Turkish crude oils
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Elsevier BV, 2013-12-01)
This study focused on the investigation of non-isothermal thermal behavior and kinetics of Turkish crude oils under combustion and pyrolysis conditions using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). On DSC combustion curves, two exothermic oxidation regions were detected known as low temperature (LTO) and high temperature oxidation (HTO). Again, two distinct reaction regions were revealed under pyrolysis conditions and DSC curves exhibited endothermic behavior for both the distillation and cracking regions....
Rheological and thermal analysis of bentonites for water base drilling fluids
Kök, Mustafa Verşan (Informa UK Limited, 2004-02-01)
The objective of this research is to investigate the rheological and thermal properties of bentonites for water base drilling fluids. Rheological experiments were performed with 4 different bentonite samples and clay percentages, cation-exchange capacity (CEC), swelling volume, pH, and physical and rheological properties of the samples are determined. The thermal behaviors of bentonite samples were investigated using simultaneous thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) techniques. ...
Determination of two and three phase relative permeabilty values by using a pore network model
Karaman, T; Demiral, BMR (Informa UK Limited, 2004-06-01)
In this study, a Pore Network (PN) tool was developed in order to obtain two and three phase relative permeability values. It has been found that the observed results agree with published data. It has also been found that as contact angle increased, irreducible water saturation decreased, and oil relative permeability increased for two phase oil-water imbibition simulations. During the three phase displacement simulation by pore network simulation it was observed that water and gas relative permeabilities a...
