Liquid Crystal-Templated Synthesis of Mesoporous Membranes with Predetermined Pore Alignment

We demonstrate that polymeric films templated from liquid crystals (LCs) provide basic design principles for the synthesis of mesoporous films with predetermined pore alignment. Specifically, we used LC mixtures of reactive [4-(3-acryloyoxypropyloxy) benzoic acid 2-methyl-1,4-phenylene ester (RM257)] and nonreactive [4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB)] mesogens confined in film geometries. The LC alignment was maintained by functionalization of the surfaces contacting the films during polymerization. Through photopolymerization followed by extraction of the unreacted mesogens, films of area in the order of 10 cm(2) were obtained. We found that, when restricted to an area either through a mechanical or a configurational constraint, open and accessible pores were incorporated into the films. The average direction of the pores could be determined by the LC director during polymerization, and the average diameter of the pores can be tuned in the range of 10-40 nm by varying the reactive monomer concentration. The polymeric films synthesized here can potentially be used for the ultrafiltration purposes. We demonstrated successful separations of proteins and nanoparticles from aqueous media using the polymeric films. The films exhibited 2 orders of magnitude higher flux when the pores were aligned parallel to the permeate direction compared to the perpendicular direction. Overall, the outcomes of this study provide basic tools for the synthesis of porous polymeric films with predetermined pore directions that can potentially be suitable for separations, drug delivery, catalysts, and so forth.

Metallurgical influence on quench distortion of SAE 52100 long cylinders
Maradit, B.P.; Şimşir, C.; Lübben, T.; Gür, Cemil Hakan (Informa UK Limited, 2011-06-01)
Quenching of steel components results in complex and hard-to-predict dimensional and shape changes (distortion). Even the components manufactured from different parts of the same semifinished product may show significantly different distortion behaviours during quenching. The reason is thought to be non-uniform distribution of distortion potential carriers in the final component (i.e. alloying elements, segregations, residual stresses and phases) which are accumulated throughout the whole manufacturing chai...
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy via gold nanostars
Nalbant Esentürk, Emren (Wiley, 2009-01-01)
Anisotropic metallic nanoparticles (NPs) have unique optical properties, which lend them to applications such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. Star-shaped gold (Au) NPs were prepared in aqueous solutions by the seed-mediated growth method and tested for Raman enhancement using 2-mercaptopyridine (2-MPy) and crystal violet (CV) probing molecules. For both molecules, the SERS activity of the nanostars was notably stronger than that of the spherical Au NPs of similar size. The Raman en...

Coordination polymers are ideal synthons in creating high aspect ratio nanostructures, however, conventional synthetic methods are often restricted to batch-wise and costly processes. Herein, we demonstrate a non-traditional, frugal approach to synthesize 1D coordination polymers by in situ etching of zerovalent metal particle precursors. This procedure is denoted as the heterogeneous metal/ligand reaction and was demonstrated on Group 13 metals as a proof of concept. Simple carboxylic acids supply the etch...
Optical and Nanomechanical Properties of Ga(2)Se(3)Single Crystals and Thin Films
IŞIK, MEHMET; Emir, Cansu; Güllü, Hasan Hüseyin; Hasanlı, Nızamı (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2020-10-01)
The optical and nanomechanical properties of Ga(2)Se(3)single crystals and thin films were investigated using reflection, transmission, and nanoindentation measurements. The reflection spectrum recorded in the 525- to 1100-nm range was analyzed to get the band gap energy of the crystal structure, and derivative analysis of the spectrum resulted in band gap energy of 1.92 eV which was attributed to indirect transition. The band gap energy of thermally evaporated Ga(2)Se(3)thin film was determined from the an...
