Poly(methyl methacrylate) hybrid syntactic foams with hollow glass microspheres and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes

2019-08-10
The study aims to produce poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-based lower density syntactic foams with hollow glass microspheres (HGMs) and to improve their mechanical properties by the addition of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) while maintaining the thermal properties of the neat polymer. First to understand the effect of POSS addition, PMMA-POSS composites with octaisobutyl and octaphenyl POSS were produced through extrusion. Higher relative flexural and impact strengths were obtained with POSS addition to PMMA. Obtaining more enhanced properties with octaphenyl POSS, PMMA-HGM-POSS hybrid syntactic foams were prepared with this additive. In general, the specific flexural strength and modulus of the PMMA syntactic foams were improved with the POSS loading, while the lower density and thermal properties of the PMMA syntactic foams were maintained. PMMA hybrid syntactic foams with 15 wt % HGMs and 0.25 wt % POSS exhibited 37.6% improvement in the specific flexural modulus with respect to the neat PMMA. (c) 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Dynamic mechanical properties of dental base material reinforced with glass fiber
Karacaer, O; Dogan, A; Dogan, OM; Usanmaz, Ali (Wiley, 2002-08-22)
Dynamic mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) reinforced with glass fibers were investigated. The composite used as dental base material contained other additives for different purposes to give the same appearance as natural dentals. The fiber-polymer bonding and orientation of fibers in polymer matrix are very important in the application of the product. To see that, the fibers were treated with silane and compared with untreated fibers. The commercial polymer and monomer used were the ...
Flexible and conducting composites of polypyrrole and polydimethylsiloxane
Cahmak, G; Kucukyavuz, Z; Kucukyavuz, S (Wiley, 2004-07-15)
Conductive and flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)/polypyrrole (PPy) composites were synthesized electrochemically. Electrochemical syntheses were performed at +1.10 V by using p-toluene sulfonic acid (PTSA) as supporting electrolyte and water as solvent. Composites were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Conductivity measurements and mechanical tests were also perform...
Chain-extended bismaleimides .1. A study of chain-extended bismaleimides as matrix elements in carbon fiber composites
Yerlikaya, Z; Erinc, NK; Oktem, Z; Bayramlı, Erdal (Wiley, 1996-01-18)
A series of chain-extended bismaleimide resins as matrix elements in carbon fibers were cured and characterized in terms of their thermal and thermomechanical properties. The cured resins were stable up to 430 degrees C and EDABMI/MDA has the highest T-g value and the lowest loss modulus value. To understand the compatibility and the degree of adhesion between the resin and the fiber, their surface properties were determined in terms of the surface energy component and single-fiber pull-out tests. The surfa...
Indium tin oxide nanoparticles as anode for light-emitting diodes
Çırpan, Ali (Wiley, 2006-02-15)
Thin films of indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles have been investigated as anode materials for polymer light-emitting diodes. A luminance efficiency (0.13 cd/ A), higher than that (0.09 cd/A) obtained in a control devices fabricated on conventional commercial ITO anodes were found. The thin films were made by spin coating of a suspension followed by annealing. The ITO nartoparticle films have a stable sheet resistance of 200 ohm/sq, and an optical transmittance greater than 86% over the range of 400-1000 ...
Flexible organic photovoltaics from zinc oxide nanowires grown on transparent and conducting single walled carbon nanotube thin films
Ünalan, Hüsnü Emrah; Kuo, Daniel; Parekh, Bhavin; Amaratunga, Gehan; Chhowalla, Manish (Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), 2008-01-01)
The fabrication of flexible organic photovoltaics (OPVs) which utilize transparent and conducting single walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) thin films as current collecting electrodes on plastic substrates in zinc oxide nanowire (ZnO NW)/poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices is reported. The bulk heterojunctions for exciton dissociation are created by directly growing ZnO nanowires from solution on the SWNT electrodes and spin coating the P3HT polymer. A maximum OPV power convers...
