The study was performed in central-northern Anatolia (from Ankara to Amasya) to investigate the relationships of the Sakarya Zone units and the Izmir-Ankara-Erzincan suture (IAES) melange. It reveals that all the Sakarya Zone units are metamorphic and three main tectonostratigraphic units have been distinguished for the first time: the BAA (metasiliciclastic rocks capped by metacarbonates and varicoloured phyllite), the BKC (poly-metamorphic garnet-bearing micaschist and metabasite with a well-preserved relict HP-LT amphibole in a low-amphibolitic to greenschist-facies framework) and the AMC (meta-arkose passing vertically to carbonate-phyllitic alternations and, then, to a thick succession of prevailing acidic to intermediate-basic metavolcanites and volcanic-rich metasediments). The BAA and AMC, whose metamorphic frameworks are of Cimmerian age, underlie the Mesozoic carbonate cover sequences (e.g. t(2-3,) j(3)-k(1)) that often show tectonic detachments and slicing. The piling up of the BAA above the HP-LT BKC can be correlated to the tectonic superposition of two similar units (i.e. the Cimmerian Cangalda Complex and the Alpine Middle-Upper Cretaceous Domuzda Complex, respectively) defined by previous authors in other sectors of the Central Pontides front. The ophiolitic melange generally underlies the Sakarya Zone, but locally (e.g. SE of Amasya) tectonically rests above the latter, probably owing to back-thrusting that occurred during the Tertiary syn-collisional shortenings and the later strike-slip tectonics. We hypothesize that, also in these areas, the Sakarya Zone-IAES consists of a complex tectonic stack of different units, belonging to different palaeogeographic domains and orogenic events (Cimmerian versus Alpine orogenies), but originated within a single long-lived (since Late Triassic to Paleocene/Eocene times), prograding subduction-accretion system in front of the Laurasian continent.

Origin and significance of a quartz tourmaline breccia zone within the central anatolian crystalline complex, Turkey
Demirel, Serhat; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal; Department of Geological Engineering (2004)
The aim of this study is to investigate the petrography, geochemistry and evolution of quartz-tourmaline-rich rocks occurring in a wide breccia zone within the Late Cretaceous Kerkenez Granitoid (Central Anatolian Crystalline Complex (CACC), Turkey). The approximately 40-m wide main breccia zone has a NE-SW trend and is characterized by intense cataclastic deformation. The breccia zone can be traced several kilometers towards the west and generally occurs as tourmaline-filled faults and 1mm-30cm-thick veins...
Palynostratigraphic and palynofacies investigations of the miocene units in the adana basin (Eastern Mediterranean, Turkey)
Türkecan, Aksel Tuğba; Department of Geological Engineering (2017)
The main purpose of this study is to investigate the palynostratigraphy and palynofacies of the Miocene Units in the Adana Basin (Eastern Mediterranean) and to establish a biostratigraphic framework for future studies. This study is a pioneering work in the Adana Basin, regarding the dinoflagellate cyst biostratigraphy. In this study, seven stratigraphic sections comprising the Köpekli, Cingöz, and Güvenç formations were measured and 482 samples were analyzed based on palynomorphs. According to the first an...
Microencrusters from the Upper Jurassic-Lower Cretaceous Inalti Formation (Central Pontides, Turkey): remarks on the development of reefal/peri-reefal facies
Kaya, Mustafa Yucel; Altıner, Demir (Springer Science and Business Media LLC, 2015-10-01)
A detailed taxonomical study was carried out for the identification of encrusting micro- organisms. Among these microencrusters, Perturbatacrusta leini, Iberopora bodeuri, Calcistella jachenhausenensis, and Pseudorothpletzella schmidi have been taxonomically revealed for the first time in Turkey. Within the biostratigraphic frame of the I. nalti Formation consisting of Mesoendothyra izjumiana zone ( Kimmeridgian), Calcistella jachenhausenensis zone ( Lower Tithonian- Upper Tithonian) and Protopeneroplis ult...
Source rock potential and organic facies properties of the oligo-miocene deposits in the Pasinler-Horasan, Tercan-Aşkale Basins (East Anatolia)
Tekin, Tansel; Günal Türkmenoğlu, Asuman; Department of Geological Engineering (2002)
The study involves the investigations of source rock potential and their organic facies characteristics and the depositional conditions of the Oligo-Miocene deposits in the Tercan-Aşkale and Pasinler-Horasan Basins (Eastern Anatolia). For this purpose, seven stratigraphic sections from each basin are studied. Organic geochemical and organic petrographic (microscopy based organic facies study) analyses are carried out by using a total of 102 surface samples. The studied sections are composed dominantly of cl...
Analysis of the North Anatolian Shear Zone in Central Pontides (northern Turkey): Insight for geometries and kinematics of deformation structures in a transpressional zone
Ellero, Alessandro; Ottria, Giuseppe; Marroni, Michele; Pandolfi, Luca; Göncüoğlu, Mehmet Cemal (2015-03-01)
The western part of the North Anatolian Shear Zone at the southern boundary of the Central Pontides in Turkey, was investigated in the Kursunlu-Arac area by means of a geological-structural field study. In this area the North Anatolian Shear Zone results in a transpressional deformation zone that extends between two master faults striking parallel to the main shear direction. The main systems of structures identified in the deformation zone appear to be oriented parallel to the directions predicted by Riede...
