In this study, the QUAL2E model is linked with a genetic algorithm (GA) in order to conduct the calibration and verification of the model. The efficacy of the optimization model was tested for different observation data quality represented by the perfect and noisy data assumptions. Four cases were studied. In the first (base) case, calibration was conducted for the reach-variable reaeration coefficient (K2) and the sediment oxygen demand rate (K4). In the second case, the number of sampling points was increased. The third case investigated the impact of objective function formulation itself on the optimization model performance. Finally, a high number of parameters were calibrated using the weighted and unweighted objective functions. In general, it was not possible to reach the exact values of the parameters at all reaches. However, the resulting water quality profiles were satisfactory and close to the goal. The performance of the optimization model improved for better observation data quality and increased number of sampling points. Furthermore, it was observed that the objective function formulation impacted the performance of optimization, depending on the observation data quality. Results of the fourth case suggested that weighted objective function minimized the domination of water quality constituents with higher orders of magnitude in concentration values in search for the best solution.

Genetic algorithm for constrained optimization models and its application in groundwater resources management
Guan, Jiabao; Kentel Erdoğan, Elçin; Aral, Mustafa M. (American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), 2008-01-01)
Genetic algorithms (GAs) have been shown to be an efficient tool for the solution of unconstrained optimization problems. In their standard form, GA formulations are "blind" to the constraints of an optimization model when the model involves these constraints. Thus, in GA applications alternative procedures are used to satisfy the constraints of the optimization model. In this study, the method that is utilized in the Complex Algorithm to solve constrained optimization problems is abstracted to develop a re...
Determination of three-phase relative permeabilty values by using an artificial neural network model
Karaman, T; Demiral, BMR (Informa UK Limited, 2004-08-01)
In this study, an artificial neural network (ANN) tool, which uses the data obtained from a pore network (PN) model, was developed in order to obtain three-phase relative permeability values. During the development of this ANN tool, four different stages were implemented in which ANN structures were changed in order to find the best architecture that would predict the oil isoperms correctly. By using the data obtained from the PN model, training was implemented and the prediction power of that tool was test...
Application of genetic algorithms to calibration and verification of QUAL2E
Göktaş, Recep Kaya; Aksoy, Ayşegül; Department of Environmental Engineering (2004)
The objective of this study is to develop a calibration and verification tool for the QUAL2E Model by using Genetic Algorithms. In the developed optimization model, an objective function that is formulated on the basis of the sum-of-least squares approach aiming at minimizing the difference between the observed and simulated quantities was used. In order to perform simultaneous calibration and verification, verification of the calibrated results was treated as a constraint and inserted into the objective fu...
Optimization of water distribution networks using genetic algorithm
Güç, Gerçek; Merzi, Nuri; Department of Civil Engineering (2006)
This study gives a description about the development of a computer model, RealPipe, which relates genetic algorithm (GA) to the well known problem of least-cost design of water distribution network. GA methodology is an evolutionary process, basically imitating evolution process of nature. GA is essentially an efficient search method basically for nonlinear optimization cases. The genetic operations take place within the population of chromosomes. By means of various operators, the genetic knowledge in chro...
Quantification and localisation of damage in beam-like structures by using artificial neural networks with experimental validation
Şahin, Melin (Elsevier BV, 2003-12-01)
This paper presents a damage detection algorithm using a combination of global (changes in natural frequencies) and local (curvature mode shapes) vibration-based analysis data as input in artificial neural networks (ANNs) for location and severity prediction of damage in beam-like structures. A finite element analysis tool has been used to obtain the dynamic characteristics of intact and damaged cantilever steel beams for the first three natural modes. Different damage scenarios have been introduced by redu...
