Besides temperature, self-aggregation of poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) (PIPOX) can also be triggered via pH in aqueous solution (25 degrees C, pH > 5). Lowest energy structures and interaction energies of PIPOX with H3O+, OH-, and H2O were calculated by DFT methods showed that, in addition to their ability to protonate PIPOX, H3O+ ions had strong interaction with both water and PIPOX in acidic conditions. H3O+ ions acted as compatibilizer between PIPOX and water and increased the solubility of PIPOX. OH- ions were found to have stronger interaction with water compared to PIPOX resulting in desorption of water molecules from PIPOX phase and decreased solubility, leading to enhanced hydrophobic interactions among isopropyl groups of PIPOX and formation of aggregates at high pH. Results concerning the effect of end-groups on aggregate size were in good agreement with statistical mechanics calculations. Moreover, the effect of polymer concentration on the aggregate size was examined. (c) 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part B: Polym. Phys. 2019, 57, 210-221

A density functional theory study of partial oxidation of propylene on Cu2O(001) and CuO(001) surfaces
Duzenli, Derya; Atmaca, Deniz Onay; Gezer, Miray Gulbiter; Önal, Işık (2015-11-15)
This work theoretically investigates propylene epoxidation reaction on Cu2O(001) and CuO(001) surfaces using periodical DFT method to determine the active copper species within the reaction mechanism. The transition states and energy profiles are calculated for the formation of surface intermediates such as oxametallopropylene (OMP) over Cu2O(0 0 1) and oxygen bridging (OB) over CuO(0 0 1) and allylic H-stripping reaction (AHS) over both surfaces as well as for formation of products. Propylene oxide (PO) an...
AN EXPERIMENTAL INVESTIGATION OF POLYVINYL-CHLORIDE) EMULSION POLYMERIZATION - EFFECT OF INITIATOR AND EMULSIFIER CONCENTRATIONS ON POLYMERIZATION KINETICS AND PRODUCT PARTICLE-SIZE
Karakaş, Gürkan (Wiley, 1989-01-01)
Effects of concentration changes in initiator species Na2SO3, (NH4)2S2O8 and CuSO4, and emulsifier, ammonium stearate, on poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) emulsion polymerization kinetics and on product particle size were experimentally investigated. It was observed that to obtain industrially significant rates and overall conversions, not only an optimum concentration ratio of Na2SO3/(NH4)2S2O8/CuSO 4 must be used, but also the concentrations of these species must be above certain limits. Increasing the concentr...
An evaluation of potential sampling locations in a reservoir with emphasis on conserved spatial correlation structure
YENİLMEZ, Firdes; Duzgun, Sebnem; Aksoy, Ayşegül (2015-01-01)
In this study, kernel density estimation (KDE) was coupled with ordinary two-dimensional kriging (OK) to reduce the number of sampling locations in measurement and kriging of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations in Porsuk Dam Reservoir (PDR). Conservation of the spatial correlation structure in the DO distribution was a target. KDE was used as a tool to aid in identification of the sampling locations that would be removed from the sampling network in order to decrease the total number of samples. Accordingl...
New approach in mitigating damage caused by alkali-silica reaction
Bektas, F.; Turanlı, Lutfullah; Ostertag, C. P. (2006-09-01)
Alkali–silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction between the alkali and hydroxyl ions produced by portland cement hydration and certain types of silica present in the aggregate. The stages that are involved in causing damage due to ASR are shown schematically in Fig. 1. The alkali ions and hydroxyl ions in the pore solution of the hydrated cement paste react with amorphous or poorly crystalline silica in the aggregates to form alkali silica (AS) gel. The AS gel expands by imbibing water and the resulting...
A new synthesis of bromobenzotropones: Oxidation of 8-bromo-5H-benzo[a]cycloheptene
Dastan, A; Yildiz, YK; Kazaz, C; Balcı, Metin (2002-01-01)
The oxidation of 8-bromo-5H-belizo[a]cycloheptene with some oxidation reagents was studied. 2,3-and 4,5-benzotropone derivatives were obtained. The structures of the bromobenzotropones were determined by H-1- and C-13-NMR data.
