Boron is a highly contaminating metal due to its toxic effects for plants even at very low concentrations. Continuous polymer-enhanced ultrafiltration (PEUF) was applied for removal of boron from aqueous solutions. The effects of operating parameters on the performance of PEUF were investigated. A commercial polymer, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) was used as the boron-complexing agent. The methodology consists of two steps: complexing boron with PVA following separation of boron and polymer complexes by ultrafiltration process. The pilot scale system utilized for the PEUF process accommodates a spiral-wound cellulose cartridge with 10,000 Da MWCO. The experimental parameters studied are metal/polymer ratio (loading) (0.01-0.5), pH (7-10), and the polymer characteristics such as molecular weight (M-n) of the polymer and degree of hydrolysis (DoH). The results showed that PEUF could be a successful alternative method for removal of boron. The permeate flux remained constant at around 19 L/m(2) hr throughout the runs and the fluxes were not affected by the operating parameters studied and by the polymer characteristics. When the loading values were decreased, the retention of boron was increased. Also, pH had an important influence as increase in pH resulted in increase in retention of boron. The polymeric M-n of the polymer did not have any influence on the retention of boron while an increase in DoH caused a decrease in retention of boron.

Removal of hydrogen sulfide by clinoptilolite in a fixed bed adsorber
Yasyerli, S; Ar, I; Dogu, G; Doğu, Timur (2002-11-01)
Due to its toxic and corrosive nature, H2S should be safely removed from the gases produced in gasification or combustion processes. In this study, adsorption of hydrogen sulfide was investigated on a natural zeolite, namely clinoptilolite. H2S adsorption characteristics of Western Anatolian clinoptilolite was studied in a fixed-bed system at different temperatures between 100 and 600 degreesC at atmospheric pressure. H2S adsorption capacity of clinoptilolite was found to be about 0.03 g S/g clinoptilolite ...
Synthesis and characterization of hyperbranched and air drying fatty acid based resins
Bat, Erhan; Gündüz, Güngör; Department of Chemical Engineering (2005)
There has been a considerable effort in the last years to decrease the amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) present in organic coatings. The risks to human health and environmental hazards associated with VOCs, governmental directives, and economic factors are the main driving forces behind this effort. One way of achieving less or no VOC containing coating systems is to produce low viscosity resins. Hyperbranched resins owing to their globular structure have low viscosities and are promising materia...
Synthesis and characterization of solvent free alkyd resin with hyperbranched melamine core

The use of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in coating materials has adverse effects on both human health and the environment. Due to concern over these problems, coating industry has attempted to decrease the solvent contents of coating materials for the last three decades by developing water dispersed and powder paints. A recently developed method to make solvent free paint is to use highly branched polymers in high solid alkyd resins. Highly branched polymers help to achieve resins with viscosity much lo...

Synthesis of zeolites from laboratory-grade chemicals is an expensive way to produce these unique particles. Zeolite 3A, 4A, 5A among Linde Type A (LTA) zeolites, and zeolite 13X among the Faujasite (FAU) type are highly valuable commercial products for various application fields, such as catalysis, water sorption, and detergent industries as water softeners. There is still great interest in finding alternative synthesis routes that will reduce the production cost of these materials in high demand. Due to t...
Removal of imidacloprid from wastewaters by ozonation and photo-ozonation
Sönmez, Büşra; Dilek, Filiz Bengü; Department of Environmental Engineering (2019)
The widespread occurrence of micropollutants in the receiving water bodies apparently shows that conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) are not capable to remove these compounds. Imidacloprid (IMI), which is a specific pollutant and an insecticide, exceeded Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) value (0.14 µg/L, annual average) in several receiving water bodies of WWTPs in Yeşilırmak basin. With the aim of examining advanced treatment methods to meet EQS value and to achieve good surface water qual...
