This study explored pre-service science teachers' understanding and acceptance of evolution and their perceived necessity of introducing evolution into elementary science classes in relation to some socio-demographic variables. A total of 415 pre-service science teachers completed the background characteristics survey, evolution content knowledge test and measure of acceptance of the theory of evolution. Canonical correlation analysis demonstrated that pre-service science teachers with well-educated parents, females, and those with high levels of interest in evolution tended to have higher levels of understanding and acceptance of evolution compared to others.

Modeling the Interrelationships among Pre Service Science Teachers Understanding and Acceptance of Evolution Their Views on Nature of Science and Self Efficacy Beliefs Regarding Teaching Evolution
AKYOL, GÜLSÜM; Öztekin, Ceren; Sungur, Semra (2012-01-01)
This study proposed a path model of relationships among understanding and acceptance of evolution, views on nature of science, and self-efficacy beliefs regarding teaching evolution. A total of 415 pre-service science teachers completed a series of self-report instruments for the specified purpose. After the estimation of scale scores using unidimensional IRT models, path analysis suggested that sophisticated views on NOS were associated with higher levels of both understanding and acceptance of evolution, ...
The contribution of understandings of evolutionary theory and nature of science to pre-service science teachers' acceptance of evolutionary theory
Akyol, Gulsum; Öztekin, Ceren; Sungur, Semra (2010-10-31)
This study examined how well pre-service science teachers' understandings of evolutionary theory and nature of science predict their acceptance of evolutionary theory. A total of 136 pre-service science teachers participated in the study. Data were collected through Evolution Content Knowledge Test, Nature of Science as Argument Questionnaire and Measure of Acceptance of the Theory of Evolution and analyzed by using Multiple Linear Regression Analysis. The analysis revealed that only understanding of nature...
Investigation of the relationship between pre-service science teachers' understandings of nature of science and their personal characteristics
Çetinkaya, Gamze; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Department of Elementary Science and Mathematics Education (2012)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible relationships between pre-service science teachers' understanding of nature of science (NOS) and their personal characteristics; understanding of nature of scientific inquiry (NOSI), epistemological world views, self-efficacy beliefs regarding science teaching, attitudes towards science teaching, metacognitive awareness level and faith/worldview schemas. The sample of the present study were 60 PSTs that are 3rd year students at elementary science edu...
Multilevel analysis of students science achievement in relation to constructivist learning environment perceptions, epistemological beliefs, self-regulation and science teachers characteristics
Pamuk, Savaş; Çakıroğlu, Jale; Öztekin, Ceren; Department of Elementary Education (2014)
This study aimed to examine student science achievement in relation to constructivist learning environment perceptions, epistemological beliefs, self-regulation and science teacher characteristics. Data were collected using a battery of instruments administered to both 137 science teachers and their 3281 seventh grade students in Ankara, Turkey. Several Hierarchical Linear Modeling analyses were conducted to analyze the two level-data which were student-level that were self-regulation (i.e., self-efficacy, ...
Investigating Elementary School Students' Motivational Traits in Science Classrooms
Gocer, Fatma Yavuz; Sungur, Semra; Öztekin, Ceren (2011-07-01)
This study examined elementary students' motivational traits in science with respect to students' gender and grade levels. A total of 3685 students from 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels participated in the study. Findings showed that gender and grade level differences exist among elementary students. Concerning the gender difference, girls appeared to be more curious, conscientious, and social with a higher level of need for achievement. Moreover, it was revealed that as grade level increased, students' motiva...
