In this study, the effect of inspection error (IE) on quality and producer losses is investigated for a nominal-the-best type quality characteristic determined by a manufacturing process centre with a separate rework unit. The probability distribution and the first two moments of the resulting quality characteristic values are derived and used together with Markov chain models and simulation to study the quality and producer losses and the related statistics for various processes and gage capability levels. The results of this study confirm with strong theoretical and empirical evidence that an effective way of achieving robustness to IE is to improve the process capability. This study provides benchmarks that support understanding and decision making of quality professionals.

Analysis of a deterministic demand production/inventory system under nonstationary supply uncertainty
Gullu, R; Onol, E; Erkip, N (Informa UK Limited, 1997-08-01)
In this article we investigate a periodic review inventory model under deterministic dynamic demand and supply unavailability. In a given period, supply is either available or completely unavailable with given probabilities. Supply unavailability probabilities are nonstationary over time. We show the optimality of an order-up-to level policy, and obtain a newsboy-like formula that determines the optimal order-up-to levels. Our formula would provide guidence as to the appropriate amount of inventory to stock...
The general lot sizing and scheduling problem with sequence dependent changeovers
Koçlar, Ayşe; Süral, Haldun; Department of Industrial Engineering (2005)
In this study, we consider the General Lot Sizing and Scheduling Problem in single level capacitated environments with sequence dependent item changeovers. Process industries may be regarded as suitable application areas of the problem. The focus on capacity utilization and intensively time consuming changeovers necessitate the integration of lot sizing and sequencing decisions in the production plan. We present a mathematical model which captures the essence of cases in the most generic and realistic setti...
Effects of tomato pulp addition on the extrudate quality parameters and effects of extrusion on the functional parameters of the extrudates
Caltinoglu, Cagla; Tonyalı, Bade; Şensoy, İlkay (Wiley, 2014-02-01)
Effects of addition of tomato pulp on the quality parameters of the extrudates, and effects of extrusion on the functional properties of the extrudates were investigated. Bulk density, volume expansion index, longitudinal expansion index and porosity did not indicate a significant difference between the extrudates with or without tomato pulp. Sectional expansion index showed a slight increase with pulp addition. Textural analysis indicated that hardness and fracturability of the extrudates with or without p...
Monitoring high quality processes: a study of estimation errors on the time-between-events exponentially weighted moving average schemes
Özsan, Güney; Köksal, Gülser; Department of Industrial Engineering (2008)
In some production environments the defect rates are considerably low such that measurement of fraction of nonconforming items reaches parts per million level. In such environments, monitoring the number of conforming items between consecutive nonconforming items, namely the time between events (TBE) is often suggested. However, in the design of control charts for TBE monitoring a common practice is the assumptions of known process parameters. Nevertheless, in many applications the true values of the proces...
The inventory routing problem with deterministic order-up-to level inventory policies
Pınar, Özlem; Süral, Haldun; Department of Industrial Engineering (2005)
This study is concerned with the inventory routing problem with deterministic, dynamic demand and order-up-to level inventory policy. The problem mainly arises in the supply chain management context. It incorporates simultaneous decision making on inventory management and vehicle routing with the purpose of gaining advantage from coordinated decisions. An integrated mathematical model that represents the features of the problem is presented. Due to the magnitude of the model, lagrangean relaxation solution ...
