Displacement-based damage functions for the components of reinforced concrete (RC) moment resisting frames have been developed. columns, beams and brick infills were considered in this study as the structural elements that contribute to the seismic behavior of RC resisting frames. Finite element analyses were carried out on RC columns and beams to investigate effects of their material and properties on the behavior of these elements, and also to develop the damage functions. The independent parameter used in the damage developed for RC columns was the interstorey drift ratio, while rotation was used as the main parameter to evaluate damage in RC beams. equivalent strut models available in the literature were used to determine the parameters affecting the damageability of brick infills and to drift-based damage functions. Additional damage functions for shear critical RC columns and beams were also developed. The damage proposed were validated via comparison to the test results available in the literature. These damage functions are proposed to be used for seismic performance evaluation of RC moment resisting frames.

Seismic behavior and improvement of autoclaved aerated concrete infill walls
Binici, Barış; Canbay, Erdem; Uzgan, Ugur; Eryurtlu, Zafer; Bulbul, Koray; Yakut, Ahmet (Elsevier BV, 2019-08-15)
Performance of infill walls in reinforced concrete (RC) frames is generally questionable under the combined action of in-plane and out-of-plane seismic demands. Despite the vast number of tests investigating the behavior of brick masonry infill walls in RC frames, past research is limited for infill walls made of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC) blocks. In the first part of the study, six single-bay single-story half-scaled RC frames were tested under the action of in-plane cyclic displacement excursions a...
Component based seismic vulnerability assessment procedure for rc buildings
Erduran, Emrah; Yakut, Ahmet; Department of Civil Engineering (2005)
A detailed seismic performance assessment procedure has been developed for reinforced concrete frame buildings with masonry in-fill walls and reinforced concrete frames including shear walls. The procedure uses member damage functions, in terms of inter-story drift ratios, developed for the primary components: columns, beams, in-fill walls and shear walls. Analytical investigations carried out to determine the influence of a number of parameters on the damageability of components were combined with existing...
Development and analytical verification of an inelastic reinforced concrete joint model
Unal, Mehmet; Burak Bakır, Burcu (Elsevier BV, 2013-07-01)
Previous experimental research indicated that beam-to-column connections of reinforced concrete (RC) moment resisting frame structures experience considerable deformations under earthquake loading and these deformations have a major contribution to the story drift of the building. In current analysis and design applications, however, the connection regions are generally modeled as rigid zones and the inelastic behavior of the joint is not considered. This assumption gives rise to an underestimation of the s...
The effect of shape memory alloys on the ductility of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints using the damage plasticity model
Halahla, Abdulsamee M.; Abu Tahnat, Yazan B.; Almasri, Amin H.; Voyiadjis, George Z. (Elsevier BV, 2019-12-01)
Using shape memory alloys (SMA) bars can significantly enhance the ductility of exterior reinforced concrete joints, where they can replace the conventional steel reinforcement. This research focuses on studying the effect of using SMA on the ductility capacity of exterior reinforced concrete beam-column joints at different column axial load levels. Finite element analysis was carried out and compared with the experimental results from the literature for verification purposes, and both were compared with th...
Seismic retrofitting of highway bridges in Illinois using friction pendulum seismic isolation bearings and modeling procedures
Dicleli, Murat (Elsevier BV, 2003-07-01)
In this paper, the economical and structural efficiency of friction pendulum bearings (FPB) for retrofitting typical seismically vulnerable bridges in the State of Illinois is studied. For this purpose, a bridge was carefully selected by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to represent typical seismically vulnerable bridges commonly used in the State of Illinois. A comprehensive structural model of the bridge was first constructed for seismic analysis. An iterative multi-mode response spectrum ...
